Russian bombers in cuba?

MOSCOW — A Russian Air Force chief said Saturday that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has offered an island as a temporary base for strategic Russian bombers, the Interfax news agency reported.

It's just a response to our Navy patrolling the Baltic.  We'd find the same sort of action, if the Russians patrolled the Gulf of Mexico with surface combatants.

There isn't any use for Russia basing strategic bombers that close.  They cease being "strategic".  They already have the range to reach anywhere in the United States, putting them close to us makes it easier for us to negate them.  It's just rhetoric.

Don't fall for the "fear card".

If they do, they are making a big mistake.  Those bombers would be shot down within seconds of lifting off in a hostile situation.

They are simply rattling their sabre.  Sad thing is we know their sabre is rusty and they'd have a hard time getting it out of the scabbard if they ever decided to try and use it.

Let the station their buffs there... it would make things easier for us.

putting bombers in cuba is a bad tactical decision, we know they are there, 1 fighter's radar can track them from any place they take off safly from US airspace.. they have 0 chance of any element of surprise.. which is the whole purpose of having them there..

it makes sense on no level except as a poke to test the waters.

putin slowly gave himself more power, they've been acting strange lately and I sure don't like it.

they have more warheads.. technically, but in active service? able to deploy?

at any rate

you can totally take nukes off the table, putin is ex KGB, meaning hes a little bit crazy, but hes not a fool, nothing short of the US invading the soviet union and starting to take the country completely over would prompt them to initiate a nuclear exchange, because they know good and well they (nobody) could win, they would be utterly obliterated.   nukes are a non factor.
