65 squadron flying P51C's at the same time as JEJ had the drop tanks modified (inside coating) to carry ale. One carried dark ale, one carried bitter. So, a lot more beer in each run.
Both parties claim to have had the merriest mess tent on the front, and as far as I know they never knew about each other.
I put my money on 65 sqn since they carried a lot more in each run. The job was unpopular though, since landing with full DT's was a wee tricky, and if the pilot made a rough bounce and spilled the ale, he was in for a load of trouble....
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)
