Disable system restore under XP
« on: March 18, 2009, 08:46:06 AM »
How do you disable it?  I want files like this:
\System Volume Information\_restore{40A0799A-3587-4B2B-9765-02606E76D364}\...\___.exe
and their folders completely erased.

Thanks.

Keep in mind if you disable it, it also (more often than not) disables all previous back ups as well.

my experience is that its a nice feature but if it gets to the point where you have to use it then its better just to start from scratch.

Pfft... One program messed up because I press a wrong button. And I have to spend 3 hours reinstalling windows and all the files I had on my computer? No thanks, I'll just spend 10 minutes initiating a system restore and voila, problem resolved. No moot, I'm not saying you're making a bad choice. I'm simply stating that system restores can come in handy when you want to save time on the small things.

I've disabled it for years.  Every previous time I went to use it, it caused a bigger mess than what I was in.  If something serious happened to my Windows install, I don't mind a nice format.

I've never seen one program screwing up cause anything that I'd have to do a system restore to fix, period.

Runs with it off, good to repartition, reformat and reinstall OS once a year anyway, even if its just to remind you how.
But your computer will run smoother, cleaner.

I always disable it right off the bat.  Waste of resources as far as I am concerned.  I have dealt with too many people who have made a mess of thier computers using it.

i use restore on a regular basis and have fixed many problems with it. i work in a corporate headquarters for a medium healthcare company as a desktop support tech.

just the other day, i had a machine that lost ip after about 5 minutes. no rhyme or reason. restored it back to 3 weeks ago, machine hasnt had a problem since.

skuzzy is right about it using resources, but sometimes you get lucky with restore and sometimes you dont. its a hit or miss thing.

This is symptomatic of another problem though.  You successfully masked it.

if your losing IP then thats the wrong way to go about fixing it IMHO, as Skuzzy stated you got it working but didnt figure out why its doing it in the first place
