My understanding is that those are initial landings of prospective U-2 pilots. Obviously its a very tough bird to land but those are 1st landing attempts. none of the planes was significantly damaged and all flew again within 24 hours...

You must have ComCast..... Works just fine.
Film is no longer available.

Common problem with the U2.  Doesn't fly well low, or at low speeds.  Needless to say, landing incorporates both of those things.

LoL.  At the 2:17 mark one of the Z28 chase cars either looses it, or the guy E-Brakes it and whips a noodlesty.

Just before the chase car loses it-

Wow hope they fired the person that designed that plane seriously..

That would have been a shame because the SR-71 Blackbird as it is known today would not exist.  Personally I'm partial to his P-38 design :)

Huh?  Everything flies better at lower altitudes, and with those great long wings I'm thinking it's a pretty easy jet to handle at low speed.  One of those go arounds from a bounce looked pretty solid, he just pitched up and climbed away.  I've always read it's a race after liftoff to keep pulling the nose up to prevent exceeding gear retraction speed.

The problem with the landings is the landing gear configuration.  It's a centerline gear taildragger.  Sheesh, my feet are twitching just thinking about the dance you'd be doing to keep that thing lined up!!  No prop blast to keep the rudder effective, and because of the centerline gear you can't use braking to help with directional control.   Yeesh.

On one of those landings where the jet goes off the right side you'll notice the pilot is holding right (wrong) rudder until he's pointed well off runway heading when he finally gets some left rudder in.

Because this is a glider with a jet engine, it is and was designed from the ground up to land, like a glider.

Till the stop, after that wing touches ground, its all about stoping quickly while keeping her serviceable.

Hmm stoping while keeping her serviceable, that's alot like pulling out before baking a kid. :rock

Out of curiosity, why was the gear actually designed like that? Why didn't it have gear like the starfighter?
