On my 4850, at home, with vertical sync disabled, offline, 1280x1024 resolution, 4XAA, 0xAF, high res textures installed, setting in the cockpit of a B24 on the NE runway of ndisles, mine is getting between 145 and 154FPS.
On which field is that?

I get this sitting on the runways at A1 with a B24 in default skin:
NW: 47fps, NE: 45-50, SE: 50-55, SW: 50.  Seems really slow.
The AH video settings (click for full size):

The in-game graphics detail settings:

The nvidia settings:

Processes from task manager (minus AH):

Hardware:
AMD 3600+ X2
2x2GB of Corsair TWIN2X4096-6400C5
Asus M2N-SLI motherboard
XFX nvidia 9800GTX+ and GTX+ XXX in SLI, 178.2 drivers (everything else hangs the system as soon as the drivers install)
Audigy SE
WinXP SP2 with all the updates
DxDiag report...  I had to re-enable the onboard sound to get the microphone working. Everything else muted it (zero signal).

My in-game graphic detail settings were all at the defaults.

I was on field A1.

I would chalk it up to the differences in CPU/memory between your system and mine.

So the two cards in SLI are really not much help, so much as a faster processor would be.  Like a ~6000+ X2?  Do you think there'd be big payoffs on a bit of overclocking the memory?  Or is there anything I can do to safely optimize its settings?  I'm not looking for any big time overclocking.

My experience with AMD is limited moot.  I suggest you hit the "Hardware and Software" forum as there are others who have more experience with that than I would.

In general, a faster CPU/memory combination will yeild better results with Aces High II, then a faster video card simply due to the amount of time we spend handling the flight model.

Thanks Skuzzy.  I was surprised because I get some pretty bad fps (as low as 15fps) in thick furballs and/or ground detail (e.g. some fields where there's heavy forest tiles all around), but I guess the other players' planes have some physics cost to them too, not just position updates.

you can easily bump your cpu speed for every little to fix your CPU part . you got a kick bellybutton video setup and i think the 3600+ is more of a bottleneck its a windsor core and 2.0ghz with 256k cache.  you should move up to a brisbane or kuma core

the kuma 7750 is fastest X2 and can be had for 63.00 at newegg.
the 6400+ the fastes brisbane core is like 73.00 at newegg.

also a side note the 9500 X4 quad cores can be had for 89.99 at tiger direct  and  run at 2.2ghz  speed and  come with a agena core w/  512k cash

and the toliman X3 flavors  can be had for 70-90

all depends on money really

i know skuzzy has stated problems with the X2's but the triple and quads are okay
