Skuzzy, or anyone. Help with switching IP addresses.
« on: February 17, 2009, 02:21:49 PM »
Using an Arris cablemodem and Netgear WGR614v6. When I plug any internet appliance. PC, vonage, xbox whatever into the cable modem directly. It pulls down an ip address in the 209 range. When I plug the netgear into the modem the netgear pulls an address in the 73.x range. Both are applicable to my provider but why does the router insist on pulling a different ip address rather than the same one devices use when indvidually connect?  :O

the router is going to pull the IP address that the internet provider sends it (I am assuming it is assigning a dynamic IP). The routher will then assign different IP numbers to the devices that you plug in.

For instance, my router when I caonnect to my cable provider gets an IP address something like 76.100.100.xxx (something like that). It then assigns my computer an IP address something like 193.0.0.100 and my xbox 193.0.0.102 and my vonage 193.0.0.103 and my I-phone 193.0.0.104, etc etc. This is perfectly normal and the way that the router should work.

Why are you having issues with this, is something not working?

If you want to change your Public IP, unplug your router. Leave it unplugged for about 30 seconds then plug it back in. The router will now reconnect to your ISP's network and in doing so receive a new IP address.

Free video clips describing the way your NAT router obtains and then re-maps IP addresses:

I hope this helps.

Can't change your IP address.  It's assigned by your ISP.  Either to your computer or the device that routes IP.  (usually a router for most)
All other IP addresses gained internally are USUALLY 192 or 10 to start but whatever you want will work fine.

If you are having issues, hard reset your router and reset the settings. (security etc)

If you for some reason have a ban because of IP, well unplugging your cable modem for about an hour or so MIGHT do it but I doubt.  Usually at least 24 hours until your 'lease' expires and it's given off to someone else that grabs it on your subnet.  Chances are though unless you are in a dense population, the old IP will be reassigned to you. (via your cable modem or directly into your computer).

In short: one IP per customer and it's not static.  If you want a perm IP address you will have to pay more.  And prolly explain why.  So your router dishes out more IP address for your 'internal' network.
Do not confused internal (your home pc, xbox etc) with your external IP adress (whatever is assigned to your router/cable modem)
