Black Screen >>computer crash
« on: March 22, 2009, 02:41:05 AM »
Hello every1, am being faced with a HUGE problem in running "Raiders of the Rising Sun".  I've VISTA on my computer, after reading instructions on running the Rising Sun Raiders, I've chgd my C:\Program Files\HTC\Aces High II to C:\Games\HTC\Aces High II (notebook 'Replace All' function).

missn2.res & missn2.fld placed in the terrain folder;  Risingsunraiders.mis into
offmis folder & the risingsunraiders(.wav), the entire file placed in missres folder.

In playing Aces High, I set terrain to missn2, offline practise, practise missions & select 'At all costs' or the Japanese planes, in either case, I've NO SOUND (.wav files don't seem to work).   As the planes are rolling down the runway (allied or Japanese) the ENTIRE SCREEN TURNS BLACK & I'm unable to restart the computer!

My only recourse is to shut down & restart my computer, this happens, unfortu-
nately on ONLY USRanger's excellent missions.  How do I rectify this & get the
missions to work?  Your assistance & solution are invited.  Thx much.

Folks running programs on Vista what or how did u load any of USRanger's missions with the sound working & the flying the mission?

I'm copying this from another thread where he had the same problem.

Make sure you put that entire folder containing the .wavs in the MISSRES folder.  Don't take the individual .wavs out.

One more thing I just noticed re-reading your post.  The mission is looking for the sounds in C:\Program Files\HTC\Aces HighII\Missres.
Open the .mis file up with Notepad ot another text editor.  You will have to change sounds from looking in Program Files to Games, then resave.  Should take about 5 minutes.  That should get you good to go.

When you open up the .mis with notepad, make sure you've changed all the sounds to look in your Games folder and not Program Files.  Sounds like that's what the problem is.

Hello USRanger:

Double checked my offmis folder, reopened it with notepad, "ALL" of the C:\Program Files\HTC\Aces High II are changed to C:\Games\HTC\Aces High II.  Checked Missres folder, no .wav files extracted, every sound in its' folder.
In fact C:\Program Files\HTC\Aces High II is presently non-existant on my Vista puter.
Tried running Raiders again, one (1) improvement, I no longer get a BLK SCREEN,
however, I'm being sent back to my opening windows screen.!  Still unable to run
the missions.... sounds still dead.  :uhoh

Hello USRanger:

But are they set to C:\Games\HTC\Aces High II\Missres\Rising Sun Raiders?

Yes, ALL the files have been changed accordingly, as per the two(2) examples below:
            C:\Games\HTC\Aces High II\missres\rising sun raiders\banzai2.wav

            C:\Games\HTC\Aces High II\missres\rising sun raiders\japmusic.wav

Ok, tried everything to get this elusive, crashing mission to work but with NO suc-
cess.   Tried running the Game in Compatibility Mode Windows 98/ME, run as
administrator, changing AH2 to Program Files, changing in offmis all files from
C:\Games to C:\Program Files.   Problem still the same ..no sound and system
crash (dark screen).

Tried running in Compatibility mode & NOT changing files, left C:\Games etc as is - - similar reaction ... no sound... sys crash...dark screen, restarted system again.

Tried running game in Compatibility Mode Windows XP SP2 with similar chgs outlined in paragraph 1 ... same negative result!   Tried again this time running AH2 in Vista, changing offmis files from C:\Program Files to C:\Games with the end results being the same, to wit, you guessed it ...still no sound &
dark screen (system crash).

Ran complete scan of my computer for viruses, malware, etc.   System's clean.
Seems like the only safe thing for me to do is to remove this mission & Winter
Breakout, thusly my headache & concerns are gone & I can concentrate on
other worthwhile missions.
