Got to make sure the PSU will handle it though.

I'll second that notion. Make sure you have the power to support it, otherwise forget it.

500 watt with a 450 minimum is cutting it close, but there is one other thing to check.  The Amperage on the 12Volt rail.  I am unsure of what the 9800GT needs, I think the GTX needed somewhere around 24Amps.  I would guess the GT needs somewhere around 18Amps.

I believe it's 20amps actuallly, but yea, any sub 500w PS would like not have that much on a rail. I just went thru all that for my wife's Dell. I just ended up getting hold of a really spiffy 7600 GS 128 bit that didn't require I upgrade the 300w PS.

Need to allow a minimum of 25% overhead for the rail as well.  If the card needs 20A, then figure 25A.  Startup current is always higher than static draw, but in order for a switching power supply to handle the load without risking damage to itself, there needs to be another 20% added to insure the power supply will meet all the load of the computer.

Which means you need about 30A on the 12V rail from the power supply, to meet a 20A static load.

IIRC Nvidia recommends at least 26 or 28 amps on the 12V rail.  I assume they've taken system requirements and overhead into that recommendation as they only recommend somewhere around 30-35 amps in SLI mode.

You can add together the amps on multiple 12V rails.  There are plenty that meet the minimum but make sure you also take into account efficiency ratings (i.e. 30 combined amps at 70% only equals 21 useable amps).

so a PSU running ,+12V1@19A,+12V2@20A with a Efficiency of 75% should work then right? or wrong?

just thought i might be easyer to let yall see the specs for it and make and model

ow and one more question how hard is it to share rails? ? ? ? i have never had to do this before. i always bought a 700Watt with triple rail +12v with 40A at lest thats what i was told to trust as a perm. PSU salute and thanks for all the help so far gents

That is not neccesarily true.  Antec, and others, use this as a marketing tool.  The current 750W Trupower from Antec has 4 12V rails all rated at 25A each, yet in the fine print it states, "The total available to all the 12V rails is 62A".
