joystick question

what are your favorite joystick-gonna be getting a new system soon and have been using the saitek st290 and like it.Dont want an x52-heard too much negativity-Need a twist rudder.What are some suggestions

I hadn't heard much bad about an X52 but if you have...

I use all CH products. The Figherstick USB, Pro Throttle USB and Pro Pedals USB. I also use a powered USB 4 port hub for this gear to insure no problems with my computer. Works fine, cost a small fortune. Wish I had more buttons available as it only has 32 programmable ones.

As far as ST290's. They're a fair beginner stick. Not too expensive and if you get it set up correctly before you really get into flying then you won't have to make changes and relearn the stick.

i just traded a X52 for a ch setup with saitek rudders. the x52 was a great stick. actually more friendly, in my opinion then the ch. what i miss is the 2 stage trigger on the x52.

now that i have a ch setup i really like it. very very smooth. i still die alot, but i look cool at the very least!!  :)

Went from the st290 to the x52 and hated it at first, took about 1-2 weeks and now i love it. I still use the 290 when I'm out of town, but when i do i really miss the x52.

If its price your concerned about, try the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. Not a bad "twisty" stick for low price. I love my X52 set up, only thing I have had go wrong with it is it loses calibration for no apparent reason. BUT, there is a better version of the X52, its the Pro model. About 70$ more than the X52 standard, cheaper than the CH HOTAS setup and is pretty much bug free so far. Both X52 setups are twisty sticks BTW.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a CH product, don't like how they are set up (button config's), some like 'em, some don't.

I used the ST290Pro for 5 years or so before it wore out. My X52 is going on 3-4 years now and still going strong.

I've had my x52 for 3-4 years as well. No problems, but there ARE some things I occasionally have to remind myself.
#1, never calibrate inside AH. For some reason it makes my stick "twitchy". It never gave me response problems just using windows calibration
#2. In advanced joystick settings, for roll and pitch, make sure to turn off stick scaling. With it on, my nose tended to bounce like a superball. Stick scaling off and I can MUUUCH easier line up shots.

One of the things I like with the X52 is the fact that you can turn off the Rudder and "lock" the stick if you ever buy rudder pedals later. Another positive is that the "grip" can be adjusted for larger or smaller hands.


However, if you don't go with the x52, the CH kits are fantastic, and the only reason I don't have one of those instead is price.

Most of your higher-end set ups won't have a twist-rudder control.  You'll have no way to control the rudder that I know of unless you have rudder pedals...

I have both an X-52pro and an X-45 and I use the X-45 mostly because the rudder control is on the throttle and uses a rocker type control..
I re-mapped that to use the thumb dial on the throttle instead as there is more fine control and it'll hold at what ever setting you put it at..
It's also easy to center..

Both are pretty good sticks..  I think people start having problems when they get rough with them..  I've never had any issues with either stick..

If you're on a budget, the X-45 is a great choice...  If you've got the cash, the X-52 or the X-52Pro are nice...

Other than that, you'll be limited to the mainly mid-range to lower-range sticks..  Some guys swear by the Saitek Aviator..  Personally, I can't stand it
and think it's pretty uncomfortable as well..

The Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro is also a pretty good choice..  I have one of these too, but it just doesn't have enough buttons on it..
You can find these used and new on eBay or Amazon..

Howdy Skull,

I use the X52 Stick & throttle setup.  It does tend to lose calibration on me sometimes.  Tried a powered USB hub, but made little difference.

I wish someone made a twisty with a 2 stage trigger.  Jaxxo and I were discussing the pros (good feel, lots of buttons well placed) and the cons(crap quality) of the Wingman Extreme 3D the other day.  Honestly if I could find someone that could mod one out with high quality pots and a 2 stage trigger I would pay $100 for it.  Other than that they are complete pieces of crap and I wouldn't touch one with a 10 foot pole.

SKull, one thing I forgot to mention about the X-45:

Since the rudder control is location on the throttle and the stick has no twist control, this negates any rudder input you do not desire when in flight..

As I explained in my last post, the X-45 has a rocker on the throttle that you control with you index, middle, and forefinger..
Or, you can map it to one of the rotary knobs on the throttle for more precision..
