Differences in tank rounds
« on: March 28, 2009, 05:44:53 PM »
AP = Armor Piercing
HE = High Explosive
HVAP = High Velocity Armor Piercing

Forgot the other ones.

I'm just guessing on the HVAP.

Could i get some information on which round was deadlier, better suited for this and that and what type of damage you got from an AP, HE, HVAP, and any others you could show or find information on.

Thanks!

Use HE for non armored targets.

AP for armored targets.

HVAP is a smaller lighter AP round (I think sabot? ) that is extremely effective at close range but looses velocity (and thus effectiveness) at longer ranges.

The stronger HE rounds are effective against armored targets if you hit in the right spot.  e.g.: The Tiger's 88mm HE will kill a panzer if you hit it square in the side from 1K out.  Its splash damage will also track many of the armored GVs from near enough.  On the other hand it is low enough velocity that it bounces off many tanks, especially the M4 turret front, the T34s many angles, and even the M8 or M3/16's or Sdk251's light armor if you hit the slope just wrong.

HE is also great for killing Jeeps. Due to their small size and high speed they can be tough to land an AP on, but an HE in the general neighborhood will pop em.  Also if troops are headed for the maproom and they are out of pintle range an HE will splatter em all over the field.
To each their pwn.

You can find the destructive power vs. structures of various rounds, including HE tank rounds, on the AH Training Corps Website. See my sig.
