Isn't that the German mosquito attempt? From what I've read, a very capable aircraft, it just came too late in the war.

As far as I remember we are getting the best nightfighter LW had - Ju88. Surely it won't take much to convert a bomber variant into a nightfighter.

humm ???  and how do you convert it ??  hex edit or what...

if we have ju88 bomber variant (glasses nose)  it will be impossible to use it as night fighter.

I meant that the model would already be there - the most difficult part as I understand. The rest is cosmetic changes - hard nose, diff armaments etc.

I cant see the whole concept working though - sure, we have night and all that but the  icons announce your presence, altitude/attitude (to some extent at least) for miles...

p.s. nonoht "first flew in XXXX" means not a lot - from that point of view Tempest V is a 1943 plane .

Let's see (V designation is prototype):

Ta 154 V-1, V-2: Equipped with Jumo 211 R engines.

Ta 154 V-3: (First flight 11/25/43): First armed prototype, 2x MK108 and 2x MG 151/20, Jumo 213 engines, Lichtenstein C.1 radar

V-4 to V-7, beginning of 44, used to test armament and radar equipment.

V-8 to V-15: pre-serial production of Ta 154 A, equipped with Lichtenstein SN-2 radar.

V-1, V-3, V-4, V-5, V-9, V-12 lost due to weak undercarriage.

10 examples of the Ta 154 A-1 were built (after the production had been delayed because the cement used in the production corroded the all-wooden structure). 8 Ta 154 A-1 were delivered to the LW, without the Lichtenstein SN-2. Production was stopped then.

Next project was the Ta 154 C, to be equipped with Jumo 213A engines (2x1750 PS), Ta 154 C-1 as night fighter, Ta 154 C-2 as day fighter, but after the production of the A-1 stopped none were built.

Ta 154 C-1: Night fighter, equipped with ejector seat for the pilot. Armament 4x Mk108 in the nose, 2x Mk108 upward firing in 'Schräge Musik' configuration.

Ta 154 C-2: Day fighter, 6x Mk108 in the nose.

Thanks Az.

Wolfgang Wagner (author of "Kurt Tank:  Focke-Wulf's Designer and Test Pilot") says only 8 A-1 were completed.  Of these he says two were crashed before delivery to the Luftwaffe.  After evaluation by a night-fighter wing at Stade, the remaining six were modified for use as ramming aircraft against Allied heavy bombers.

I'd prefer to see a Ju 88 night-fighter variant.  These saw combat in signficant numbers, some of the later models had very impressive performance, and the existence of a Ju 88 bomber model makes life easier for HTC.

I would prefer the DH mosquito or P61.
both would work well against Lancs..

The allies bombed the glue factory and the substitute glue didn't work.  I think there were 3 crashes when the program was cancelled.  Apparently 24 planes were built and some were used as Me-262 trainers.
