For the love of God don't let your kids ........
« on: April 03, 2009, 04:18:09 PM »
paint their room purple. They moved out about 6 years ago. So far I have used 3.5 gallons of primer trying to cover that crap up. I hope this last half gallon does the trick. Going to be close.

In many different ways. Still I have painted for the last 3 days and it's all primer.

AMEN!

We moved into a temporary house before moving to our new home.  ONe room (I wanted for my office) was medium purple.  Jeesh!

I painted over it Hunter Green and it took 3 coats in some places.

Good luck, bro!   :salute

Get some KILTZ from Home Depot, they have a special mix just for dark colors and covering oil based paints.

Was I the only one who was forced into labor... err taught by their father to thouroughly and evenly sand down the entire wall (and in the process most of the old paint) before priming and painting it?

Rather, use a light purple, like periwinkle. Much easier to paint over, and the color is good for being drawn on as well.

Sound like a man with experience.  Kids + Dry Erase markers == dad or mom long time repainting.  Those buggers go through most paints like nothing.  I love the 3 to 5 yr old drawings :)

Sanding, and then (even an oil based) primer.
Be careful to prime very well, since inadequate priming is often the reason behind "shades", and then it takes you many extra coats to get rid of them.
I presume that you are painting a much lighter colour?
Good luck anyway, and thanks for the tip, - my daughters love that colour....

Well, I was the one who drew on my walls in PENCIL and a little paint when I was younger than five, as well as the one who had to clean them eight years later when we moved. Good times...

It's finished. Only took one coat of finishing paint after 3 coats of primer. Went from purple to ash gray (an almost white gray) on the walls and ceiling white on, of course the ceiling. Also used the ceiling white for the trim. It looks fantastic! This old man is very very sore. This took 6 days starting last Monday. This coming Monday I plan on to start sanding the floor. I'm looking forward to that. I'll post some pictures later.

Hopefully I will have given some of you new parents some heads up.  :lol :lol :lol

we are reno-ing our house....the wife wanted this deep burgundy for the bedroom.

so, a 20x15 room took 5 gallons (over new and primed drywall) to cover it.  we at first bought 2 gallons, then when we went back for more, they asked us, "did you use tinted primer?"

Well, you zipperhead, if we needed it, why didn't you sell it to us when we were here origionally?

Worst thing is, my wife loves the colour. I hate it.

Next time get them to put a shot of black in the primer... gives better coverage than the plain white off the shelf, or even a light grey. I paint and my house gets a new colour everytime I see one I like. Due to the fact that we work with companies that use colour consultants and architects I have change the colour of all the houses I have lived in many times.
