Q: Where did that "MG 151 in the cowling" rumour start from anyway?

It's appeared in various textbooks.  Where it started I don't know, but I suppose someone made an initial mistake than everyone else copied it....

Incidentally, the only a/c I know which were supposed to have MG 151 cowling guns were the Do 335 and a version of the Ta 152.  Merrick's excellent book on German aircraft interiors has a photo of a Ta 152 cowling with the panels off to show the guns, captioned as MG 151s.  Trouble is, they had perforated barrel casings, which makes them MG 131s....
