Ship traveling on water sounds
« on: April 04, 2009, 08:39:05 PM »
Anyway we could get a wave crashing over bow sound or something when on board a ship.

Its kinda lame to be on board a ship and have it be totally quiet.

I agree there is nothing like the sound of a bow wake.

ever been on an CV? Near the front, during down times you can hear a hissing sound as the water is split by the bow, but if there is ANY deck activity its very hard to hear. Aft, the hissing is a bit louder, and you also can hear a bit of a rumble/chop as the water is churned up in the wake, again if there is any deck activity you hear almost nothing.

It is nothing like the bow of a speed boat slapping against the water as it works to get plained out and on top of the water. Big ships are made to CUT through the water. Its a large mass and anything that can make it slices though better is used so the power can then be used for speed.

What you do hear is activity. Men working, engines running, chains banging around, trucks moving planes and so on. Below decks are rumbles and shudders as well as machinery. There are not too many quite places on a working CV, I know, it was home for 2 years. The whine of the hydraulic pumps for the rudders was my lullaby for all that time, do you know how often they make course correction even on a ship THAT size? About every 3 seconds it seemed like !  LOL!!!

To add a sound to the game CVs would be a continuous loop of "white noise" type stuff. Nothing you could really pick out, just a bunch of "noise".

Sounds from all the ack, not just the manned guns... Water sounds when there's no ack or sirens going off would be good though.  Some very low level ambient nature sounds in all fields towers/hangars/etc would be good too, IMO.

Sounds of noon bells, test of ships alarms and whistle, bosn piping chow, flight crash alarms. sounds of general quarters when enemy planes break dar would be cool.

Sounds of noon bells,

bells are rung a lot more than that, a watch is 4 hours and they use the bells to signal how far along through the watch you are. In the game they would be ringing a lot to mark the shortened time in the game.

Quote
test of ships alarms and whistle,

rarely happens. At sea the ship and ships company is at a heighten state, extra alarms just messes with everyone so they don't do it. Drills are scheduled in advance.

Quote
bosn piping chow,

never happens. not everyone is on the same schedule. forward mess was open 23 hours a day serving hotdogs and hamburgers with a salad bar. Main mess served 3, 4 hour meals a day. You either made it, or you missed it.

Quote
flight crash alarms.

you hoped you never heard it. In two years I hear it twice, and  and maybe 3 more times as drills.

Already has a sound for that doesn't it? Thats when the "warning" is played isn't it?

Your imagination really adds a lot more than there really is. You would be very surprised at how different it is compared to what you "think" it should be like. I don't see a point in adding stuff for "realism sake" that isn't real.

Peacetime underway we would pipe morning meal after revelee. We would pipe morning muster by department as far as deck, engineering, Ops, etc. Noon meal for ward room and same for mess deck. At noon exactly we would test ships alarms and whistle. Sweepers was around 3PM. With helo Ops or drills, they went into the plan of the day wherever they fit. At 7 there's setting yoke throughout the ship. Also known as evening reports. After that the ships store would open. Then 2200 taps. With the ingame speed that would get annoying I do see what you mean. I've been underway just not on a floating city.

I would like to see a low hissing sound for the water, maybe a low humming when sitting on the bridge. Anything? It sucks when you are waiting for a CV to be in range of something, and you are the only one around. There's nothing to possibly hear, nothing!

I love the idea, and I agree that nothingness is infuriating. Especially when I log in and I want to make sure my volume on my headphones is set proper. Nothing like hearing nothing, assuming you're fine, and starting your engine only to have your eardrums blown out. Any noise anywhere is nice.

flight crash alarms

that would be good, triggered by any friendly with damage on short final. might stop some of the admirals changing course when your trying to land deadstick with important bits of plane missing :furious

fugitive, you may not have heard it much IRL, but thankfully you haven't been involved in a major naval battle (unless you're a WWII vet)

Yeah we do need a bit more immersion...the sound of the sheep running around a remote country side landing strip...flies in the deserted control tower....

 :rofl

I swear I hear the air-raid siren no matter what base I'm at.  I'll be waaay in the back, behind the lines and I still hear it very faintly.

I think....
