Sherman Stacks?
« on: April 05, 2009, 01:07:33 PM »

What are those stacks on the back for.  Been wondering a long time. Seems to be on alot of the d-day landing shermans. My guess would be breathers but they are sooo big.  Tuk151

Intakes for fording operations during the Normandy Landings. Designed to be removed when they got ashore.

Commonly called "deep wading" tanks.  The tank could be driven in water up to its turret top without swamping the engine.  One was for air intake, the other for exhaust.

Do you have a bigger picture by any chance?

The irony of both the last two pictures is the driver's hatch being open.  Of course, the water isn't that deep.

I wonder what the integrity of the other waterproofing is, like the hatches opening and closing or around the turret ring itself?

Well, the shermie thread was locked, but there's just one factor that made it better in RL than it would in AH....
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

What is that?

To me its seems better in AH than it was IRL.

Versatility.
Various gadgets enabling the Shermie to do all sorts of things. BTW, wasn't the T-34 pretty good in deep water as well?
