How many 75mm HE rounds does it take to lick a building?
« on: April 06, 2009, 12:07:26 AM »
I'm working on getting the strike role down in the B-25H.  I like big boomsticks in airplanes, you see.  However, while I can find how many bombs it would take to destroy certain structures, I can't find how many 75mm HE shells it would take to level a building such as a hangar.

So, does anyone have any ideas as to how many 75mm HE rounds it takes to lick a building?  More specifically a hangar?

1 75mm round and one 3 second burst of the machine guns is enough to take out any building in a town in one pass.  I think it takes around 10-12 75mm rounds to take out a hanger at an airfield.

25 75mm, 18 88mm, IIRC.  HE from a gv.

Kills a "hanger", FH, BH, VH, maybe a shore battery too.

Not 100% sure.  It's been awhile.

Not to sure about the shore battery. Hangers take 3000lb but SB takes 4000lb, so it must take more tank rounds as well.

Best bet with the 25H is to use your .50s too when strafing down a hangar. It'll spare you some 75mm, and allow you to take down a second hangar with your guns.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

To put it to some numbers:

The 21 rounds of 75mm HE are the equivalent of about 3200lbs bombs
The 3200 rounds of .50 cal ammunition equal about 3700lbs of bombs when used against structures

I'd worked out the optimal number of 50 cal and 75mm to fire per pass, but can't recall it and can't find the scrap of paper I'd done it on.  It's the best way to hit just with the right amount of both in nice even numbers, so you don't spend much attention on it.  A good tactic, when you can spare the ammo, is to set the B25 into a climb (auto-leveled) and fire both rear and top 50cal at the target on your way out. You can also put the B25 into orbit near an object and stand on the rudder from the side guns to get some use out of those too, but IIRC they don't have much ammo.

And like Lusche points out you're just short (600lbs' worth or ~5-600 .50cal rounds) of enough ammo to take out a vbase's hangars without bombs.  But you can use the gunner positions to fill the difference.

Wow, thanks for the info everyone.  Those hangars take a lot more than I thought they would.  That warhead chart is handy.

FYI, this is a small chart I did some time ago. Showing the total destructive power some popular attackers are carrying. Defensive guns are not factored in.
