Update. Been sanding for 3 days now. Using a vibrating sander around the walls and belt sander for the rest. My arms are so tired I can't pick them up and my little pinky finger on my right hand is a quivering neurotic mess. Makes it hard to type.

Oil based paint would be a waste, more expensive. I ran a painting company for a few years, flat paint should do the trick. Yes sanding is key. You will still see the purple through the primer, but then add two coats and it.

One coat of Kilz followed by one coat of Sherwin Williams best interior latex (beige) covered our son's dark 3 blue walls.  The fourth wall had a hand painted dragon appearing to exit the closet door, breathing fire.  The Wife painted it.  It covered the entire wall and was a blend of many oil based paints.

The walls are painted, Thank goodness! I've been sanding the floors. I cannot believe that those belt sanders can require so much strength. I let it go one day thinking it would just go across the floor a couple of feet. Nope, it smacked the wall on the other side of the room. Of course now I have to repair and repaint.

we have a rent house that they painted purple w/black trim-that was the worst ever to straighten out-definitely gotta use kilz
