It would be a neat sight to see a flaming drop tank falling from the sky with the current in-game evening lighting

Agreed, the drop should be able to catch fire, just like the internal fuel tanks we carry. But I do think it's hard to model (since it's basically ordnance).
Although I've never heard of this happening IRL, Im sure it would've been possible.

I agree, they should be able to catch on fire. Although this would have probably never occurred in WWII (pilots dropped the tanks before engaging an enemy aircraft), it would still be nice to have the feature.

You can find quite a few WW2 guncam clips where you can see German fighters with their drop tanks still on.
O guess it was quite possible that badly trained rookie pilots in late 44 simply forgot to drop them in the heat of the battle.

I figured that it might have happened, yet having no solid evidence to support my claim I went with the, "less likely" route.

There's a gun cam clip out there somewhere of a 109 with a drop tank on getting hit in the drop tank and the drop tank explodes.

Imagine all the kill stealers diving in from 15k to kill the drop tank.

I believe someones said something like this before and I'll post again.

If it's a cannnon round, and it hit a drop tank it should, indeed, explode.

Shouldn't rounds going through a bombers bomb bay cause any bombs to explode in the plane? Sorry if that's a hijack.

iunno bout the exploding part. it would take ONE round to make a tank explode.....that means i could take some tempest down with one 303. now whoever is in that temp is gonna be REEEAL Pissed. i agree with the catching on fire. But there really isnt much point seeing as once the victim sees that his tank is on fire he can simply drop it. And if it stays on for too long it can explode i guess. meh this is gonna be just as hopeless as the B-29

That happened a lot towards the end of 1944, but they didn't catch fire, they exploded.
