Reports on tv are the Alabama capt has been rescued and 3 of the 4 pirates were killed, the other pirate captured.  Woohooo!

Rumors are the capt jumped in the water again, and that allowed this to happen.

The survived pirate was at the US ship negotiating at the time the captain jumped again so he most likely was captured without a scratch.

I wouldn't hold my breath about any 'intel' though. Nothing in Somalia is organized, these pirates are poor peasant groups that invested in Kalashnikovs and took a career of piracy. They probably start a firefight the moment they see eachothers.

whatever happened to trolling for sharks? wasn't the coast littered with them once upon a time? Rope they got - just tool him up for about 15 or 20 minutes, give him a scuba tank and drag him behind the boat.

Sharks are endangered critters in some areas, can't go playing with the sharks.  As a matter of general policy, local wildlife must be left alone by military folks anyhow.  Even the millions of rabbits on Sheppard AFB must be left to go about their business, as the word is that they're "the wing commander's rabbits" and therefore should not be troubled.

We're lucky we don't have to salute the things.

The story on CNN changed again...  Supposedly the captain didn't actually jump in the water again.  The current version is that the snipers saw one or more of the pirates level their guns at the captain, and decided he was about to get shot.  That's why they took action, not because the captain jumped overboard again.

Either way, it doesn't matter much except to get the story straight and to ensure whoever does the TV movie gets it right  :lol

Pirates currently hold more than a dozen foreign ships, most moored along the Horn of Africa nation's long coast, with about 230 foreign sailors from Russia to the Philippines.

I didn't realize that many ships are currently being held.

This is great news!  The captain of the Alabama ought to get a congressional medal of honor for his bravery and actions.

As for the pirates, well, they ought to get 105mm shells from AC-130s :t

It's no longer called the "Congressional Medal of Honor", just the "Medal of Honor".  It is only awarded to military personnel, not civilians.  The capt did display some incredible bravery throughout.

There is a bit of a difference in killing someone holding a gun to an Americans head and threatening to kill him, and waterboarding a prisoner.  Surprised the difference escapes you.

Arrrff, young slackers with guns, and they got....shot. Tough, isn't it. Maybe it will make their friends think.
Anyway, are vessels in open sea on these routes not allowed to be armed? Would solve a lot of problems...

Civilian ships are not allowed to be armed with anything bigger than a few small arms.

And that is exactly why all these nations had to send some 30+ ship alot of them warships to patrol coast's with how many thousands of sailors on them, burning fuel wasting time and resources from all those nations.

These ships need to be armed them self's, strap a few 20mm or .50's on them. now the "pirates" are threatening to kill any american or french hostage on sight. This calls for something a little bit more than a crew armed with one pistol or a rifle.
The "Pirates" have ak-47's other medium machine guns, and rpg's.

Otherwise it will be the blood and $ and suffering of untold thousands of others, who depend on these ships to get where they need to go, not to further help aid and fund a pirate nation who's people are more willing to highjack and port ships in free trade lanes, keep over 200+ people hostage, than they are to form a government and become any part of the real world.

Pirates only vanished in the past when the worlds major sea power's put a "war" out or piracy, drove them off the sea, and slaughtered them on land. Paving the way for free shiping through the blood of piracy.

And i say, if they wish to take a 1 million+ dollar ship put the lives of the crew at risk or death, than someone make them pay a "million dollar's in blood" to get it, or more. Death to all pirates & Slavers alike.

Undeterred Somali pirates hijack 3 more ships, how many more till the crews and shiping company's are allowed or will do something more, and what type of message is this sending to other pirate nations?

I believe this is the most accurate account. I'm actually surprised the order to fire wasn't given sooner. If what I read is correct, the range was somewhere around 25-30 yards. My 79 year-old mother in law could make that shot.
