Brittish P-40 Package
« on: April 16, 2009, 06:39:09 PM »
i was watching  great planes on military channel, they said when the british got their p40 they swapped the original engine with their Rolls Royce, which works better at high alt. btw, im not a rook. so i wish that in the variants for weapons n such in the hanger, their should be a variant for engines, if that aircraft(such as the p40) had more that one type of engine used in the war. get what i mean?

I don't recall the P-40F being any great boost over the E.

Simply swapping engine models in the hanger between sorties would be a bit far fatched.

Usually, when an aircraft had a design overhaul it usually changed the model number as well.  In your case of the P40x, the P40B is an older version that has a different gun package, different engine, different fuel tanks (iirc), different pilot armor (iirc), etc etc.

IMO, it is just better to have a completely different models available otherwise we'll get some of the nasty hy-brids like the old Spit5, the old 109G-10, and our current Mossie.   ;)

In the case of the P40, I'd like to see the P40N version real soon.   :aok

IIRC from previous posts on here about RR powered P-40s, they still only had a single-stage supercharger and performance was comparable between the RR and Allison.

If it was a major difference in performance, I'd vote for it, but for our purposes it really isn't needed. We don't have to worry about supply lines, trained mechanics and spare parts availability.

I agree with the Loon, I'd much rather see the P-40N.

At least one P-40 pilot said they noticed no difference in the models up until the N showed up. Until then there was little difference between them.

In the merlin models the full throttle height was at a different altitude, but the climb, acceleration, and top speeds were similar.

Also consider our P-40E is a frankenstein, more similar to a P-40K than a P-40E. Es didn't have WEP, so you're already getting better performance than USAAF pilots did  :aok

And this tells you why watching the military channel is not a good source for accurate history.  The Merlin P40s were used almost exclusively by USAAF units in the MTO and some in the Pacific.  It was an American made Packard Merlin, and was a single stage supercharger so high alt was not improved.  The RAF used Allison engined P40s outside of  few Merlin models that some MTO SAAF units used.

As someone mentioned, the best performers were the lightweight N models that were Allison engined birds.

Krusty, if our p40E should indeed not have wep, will it be less powerful running operation on max power?

I've been wondering that myself!!

If it meets all the speed marks for an E, but has the power of a later model with WEP, the entire system is a mis-matched frankenstein!!

And, if we reduce power to normal, why is it suddenly slower? Has the drag been wrong this entire time? I feel E retention is far too high on this plane. Then, if they reduce power, but tweak something ELSE to make sure the top speed is met, will the climb rate suddenly change? You see, changing any one thing on the plane could royally screw up many other aspects of it.

Needs to be rebuilt from the ground up to get us something representative of a real P-40E.

The 79th FG flew the Rolls Royce version in the African desert battles. The P-40F and the "L" models have the Rolls Royce merlin engine and yes these were faster and had a heavier bomb load capacity. The "L" model was a lengthen in the fuse lodge area.

Check out the 79th FG commander standing by "Little Joe"

Here is some good information for you good members.
