a malta local with 4 20mm and a big fat sand filter that hurt performance and added drag and great desert cammoflage.
Fester was my in game name until September 2013

Actually, the Spitfire V in AH is a VC, fitted with "B wing" armament.

What you're describing is a VC(T) with a "C wing" armament.   The Malta ones usually had 2 of the cannon removed though. 2 Hispano was enough.

Would be a good plane to have, especially for MTO/Nth Africa scenarios.

Yeah, I would dearly love a Spitfire VC with Vokes filter... or even a Hurricane IID (!!!) with Vokes filter!  That desert scheme looks cool.

But, how about a Spitfire VIII with Vokes filter... I believe this model was a toughened up and heavier Spitfire V (or IX?).

Pull out 2 of the 20mm's too.Thats what they did at malta.

Paint tz on it and im in

Beurling flew various spit v's but the tz spit was often his.

Taking all secondary guns off spits would be a nice thing for us spit dweebs out there too. Or the option for 4 cannons in a spit v.

Read a biog of a canuck spit pilot who flew from Malta.  (not Beurling)  He was given his own personal spitV.  He did many things to it to improve its speed and performance.  He took off any unneccessary components (or in his opinion)  He removed all guns but the hispanos and found its performance to be quite close to a spit9, once he'd made his mods.

That pilots name was olmstead. His bio blue skies is a nice read. He flew in i
Italy Malta and Europe.

His mkv was nearly a mk 9 under 10k he felt.

They sanded his plane put polish on it<wax?>
Added a mk9 exaust manifold removed all armor except the seat.
Took the 4 mg out.

Does sanding and polishing a plane really improve performance by much?
if so, how much.

By removing paint, you save weight, which means a lighter acft. For example, something like 500lds for paint on an 767. American Airlines flys it's acft polished. Means lest weight, an increase in fuel efficy. The wax, polish smooths out the imperfections of the skin. The air flows smoothly across the surface. Least resistance.

Animal- there is NO WAY to emphasize how much this matters. One of the reasons that VVS planes in AH are so poor is because the data used on them is the info gained from field planes, compared to the results available from test planes.

This, for example makes the Yak-9U a 415 mph fighter instead of a 435! mph fighter!!!. Dirty planes got slower, this was very important with all Soviet planes. Frankly the only way a 1500hp plane like the 9U went 435 mph was to make it aerodynamically clean. American and german pilots were aware too- on the eastern front German pilots recieved great boosts by making sure their planes were cleaned and poilshed before flights. On the african front P-38 pilots over Italy complained bitterly of the performance loss when the airfields were muddy and sprayed the plane on takeoff.
