VIRUS ALERT
« on: April 18, 2009, 04:07:58 PM »

Gentlemen,
Ive just been banned for 10 mins from the radio bar in ah for trying to explain about a little virus called conficker b......this annoyed me c'mon get the profanity rules sorted.

Ok anyway the conficker b virus will disable certain services on your pc so that you cannot acces any A/V sites(kaspersky, onecare live etc) as of yet it doesnt seem to have a destructive payload but no one seems to know what its agenda is so heres how i fixed it on several pcs running xp.

In the run command box type services.msc which will bring up a list of services that are running on your pc
Check that the bits service is running and set to manual(background intelligent transfer).....also Automatic updates are set to auto(for the time being you can set it to manual later) and that the error reportin service is running(if you are infected then these will be disabled and you wont be able to access windows update)
then open the run box again and enter this command "regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll" then restart and go straight to the microsoft onecare live site and run a scan on your system it can take a bloody long time but once complete you should be clear and have no more trouble.
Like i said the virus itself doesnt seem to do anything else YET but an infection is an infection and should be removed asap so that there is no chance of it becoming a problem in the future.

You probably know all this already but i thought id pass the info along as it may help someone out......have fun keep it clean Merlin out........ :salute

Symantec had a remover for this one that I ran on all my machines. NOD32 never allowed the virus on my machines.

There's a simple tool to check if you have conficker - conficker eye chart. If you see the logos of antivirus companies you're probably fine. If the logos won't display it means a virus has blocked your access to the sites.
