wireless lan connection with AH
« on: April 21, 2009, 02:18:40 AM »
Hi Guys,

Some input wanted please.

I was wondering how many of you play AH on a wireless LAN,  I don't trust gaming with any sort of wireless devices/connection as a hard wired one is obviously desirable.

I'm moving in 2 weeks and the situation with where the phone line comes in and where I want to stick my desk / gaming room is across the hallway.  There will be a distance of about 5 metres from where the router will be too my machine.  With one thin internal wall inbetween.

If I'm reported to be laggy or not smooth I will have to come up with a better plan but my g/f / landlord won't be impressed with an ethernet cable running around the hallway .

Thanks

edit: forgot to mention it will be a linksys WAG200,  i also have a netgear 834G.

I used wireless for over 2 years and only recently connected with a wired connection. I never had any warping or lagging issues. I actually connected only connected using a wired connection trying to improve since the last update because I started noticing some stutters, but this did not help and I could probably go back if I wanted to.

Good Luck

You will probably lose VOX often and/or be garbled over VOX.  Occasionally you will drop UDP for TCP.

UDP takes a big hit over a wireless connection as any errors in the bit stream kill the UDP packets.  TCP will simply retry.  This usually causes stutters in the game as the network pretty much has to stop until the retried packet is successfully sent.

does the mtu size have any bearing on how many packets could get dropped over wireless?

My ISP decided that the best size for the LLU service to be 1460.

Generally speaking, the MTU should match whatever your ISP uses.  It helps to reduce packet fragmentation.

i'm sure it will be fine,  will have to keep an eye on it.

Do you use matching brand wireless cards (PCI) or  usb dongles?

Going to steal my g/fs belkin Pci card out of my old machine to use with this linksys router.

I'd run the cable and use something like this to make it look purty so the girfriend/landlord don't flip.

PCI if you have to, because USB is essentially a bit rubbish. the less things you have attached by USB the better :aok

anyone tried HomePlug or any other network over mains system? might be worth a look.

You really should avoid USB connections of any kind for your Internet connection.  The interface is way too CPU intensive.

You do have issues. You just may not attribute them to the wireless connection.  It is impossible not to have some issues, such as the occasional garbled voice, or a slight pause or stutter in the game.

There is no such thing as a 100% error free wireless connection.  It cannot happen.  It will never happen.

well i may have had but never noticed them .. most of the problems i did have had to do with my old X2 cpu before i switched to my new phenom cored one.  and even with a wired connection i have had TCP/UDP problems so couldnt really say wireless was a issue.
