Fw 200C-4, not the model shot down in the following story, which was very likely an Fw 200C-3, without radar.
America's first air to air kill in the ETO came on August 6, 1942. Two pairs of P-38Fs from the 27th Fighter Squadron, supported by a pair of Curtiss P-40C from the 33rd FS attemped to intercept an Fw 200 stoging around Iceland. Flying out of Keflavic, Capt. John Weltman, assisted by his wingman shot the down the intruder. Oddly, one of the P-40C pilots received 1/2 credit for the kill despite his admission that he never closed to within firing range, and turned back as his fuel became an issue.
Had the Germans realized that the long range P-38 was operating in the role of interceptor, they probably would not have sent the Condor to the island in broad daylight.
