New Car too!
« on: May 02, 2009, 11:50:34 PM »
Just picked up a new Pontiac G8 GT.  Liquid red, sunroof, premium package.  Drives like any other modern 4-door sedan with a corvette engine :)

I'll post pics later when it's not raining...  The dealer had it all shined up and pretty, and then I drove it home through the rain.  Not pretty anymore.

Nicely done!!  Have loved the G8 since it was first introduced and would love to get my hands on one.

Quick, go buy a second one for a spare parts car.   :D

Seriously, what guarantees did you get that spare parts will be available in the future, with Pontiac going under?

You can still get Studebaker parts....

Of course, something is discontinued and everyone who knows anything about them suddenly ceases to exist.  People who used to work on them certainly won't see any need to continue.

You can still get your discontinued Oldsmobile serviced at any GM dealer... Parts are available. GM will continue to honor all Pontiac warranties and maintain all required parts for years to come. This is now guaranteed by the Feds for all new car sales by GM and Chrysler.

Pontiac has some nice liquidation deals going on now.  I saw as much as $10,000 off a G6 in the paper yesterday.

That G8 is an absolute beast.  Try not to kill yourself, eagl :)

Not bad, eagl, not bad.  Go have fun with that thing, and post up some pics.

BTW, AWwrgwy, it's spelled DeLorean.  I get weird about stuff like that. :aok

Well, the parts thing depends on 2 rumors.  First, Holden will continue to make parts because they are still making/selling the car down under.  Second, someone on a G8 board is saying that there is some govt regulation that says the car manufacturers aren't allowed to abandon cars and must keep parts available for 7 years.  That doesn't mean your local dealer will have the parts, but they should be able to be ordered for 7 years.

There are already companies making money importing holden parts to the US, since GM went cheapo on a few things.  Just two examples, they removed the spare tire and jack from the trunk to help the car lose enough weight to fit some EPA standard or another (and to help it beat 5-series BMW on the track), and they did not install a nice looking piece of engine bay trim that fits over the top of the radiator to make the engine bay look a lot cleaner.  It's a standard holden part and costs around $30, but pontiac didn't ship G8s with the trim so people have to order it from Australia.

Gov't requires car manufacturers to support cars for a specified number of years yes, but what if the manufacturer ceases to exist?  Who do you force to support the car?   Just wondering.

The G8 is the first North American application of GM's new global rear-wheel-drive architecture developed by Holden, GM's Australian subsidiary.

My father just sold his Holden Monaro (Pontiac GTO), and that was a great car to drive.

The G8 GT should be great fun.
