Hi Niklas,

the aircraft could be a Lockheed P2V Neptune, I think.

Kind of looks like an IL-2...but no idea what would be under it's wings.

actually... the wings look a lot like a 109, and the elevators just look distorted i think... 109 with rockets underwing in pods?

Most probably a B-17C or B (I'm betting on the C) if you think about the location and look at the "bulged" side windows...

Looks like a flying boat. Catalina? Look at the tail, the turret pods are there. The tail and wings also correlate with a flying boat.

It's clearly a PB4Y Privateer, as said at  http://www.divetheworld.com/Projects-team/Projects/Unknown1/index.htm .

"There is a lot of discussion about it being a PB4Y Privateer but the wings don't seem long enough.  The tail seems to be different from the one on the Jane's picture also"

The image is distorted, so the wings and tail seems shorter than they are. If you expand it to make it wider with any image editing program, it clearly matches the silhouette.

Hmmm, wing width at root and the shape of the horiz stab don't look like Privateer, but the only other candidate would appear to be an early B17 and the fuselage shape and engine nacelles don't appear right for that.  Indeed a mystery.

Guys...it's not distorted...it's turned over on it's side.  I'm fairly sure of this.

Hi DA-98,

I agree with distortion and Privateer identification.

I withdraw my Neptune suggestion, the outer port engine shows clearly that the nacelle is faired into the upper wing, so it doesn't match the jet engine nacelle the Neptune carried under the wing. Wingtip shape doesn't match the Neptune's, either.
