Testing AH planes?
« on: November 18, 2001, 08:57:00 AM »
Hi

Was wondering why anyone hasn't tested any planes like HOOF or IDDON in WB? Sure there's lots of work, but if we just could agree the terms of testing and then share tests with volunteered people. This way we could get practical info about fighters compared to others.
Now what should we test?

- Level speed
- Climb
- Acceleration
- Turning
- Vertical turning ?
- Dive

other things?

So what do you say?

Ideas?

Hi Vector,

from testing aircraft in other games, the most useful parameters are (in this order):

- level top speeds over altitude
- climb rates over altitude
- roll rate over speed (both directions :-)

I've also tested specific excess power in constant G/constant speed turns (as a turn performance test.)

Climb rate at a certain altitude over speed is also useful since it gives a picture of the acceleration capability.

Dives should typically be limited by Mach number, I guess that one can be provided by a very quick test.

Vector,
glad to meet others who are interested in experimenting  :)
if you search this forum, you'll find quite a few tests that have been done.
I have started my own flight tests page, but completed only a small number of them (many more are planned).
you can find there a zoom climb test (a bit outdated, problematic and will be re-done) and a fuel consumption tests that i need for setting the amount of fuel on planes in future tests. not much for now.

If someone has a lot of time on their hands there are a few tests I would like to see conducted.

Establish best glide speed/angle for each aircraft (power off / clean). Best - meaning the aircraft glides the furthest.

Establish best climb speed/angle for each aircraft (power @ 100% / Full Military Power). Best - meaning the aircraft achieves a target altitude in shortest time.

Already doing these for the ponies...  Might share if/when finished, if asked nicely.  ;)
