I think Jocko was doing a Russian spit I know I had posted a thread at some point or he did? Here it is some of the links have pictures that may be better suited to skin. His was a Spit five.

I've been side tracked lately with another project and a lot of RL stuff but yes, I did start a VVS LF Mk IXe skin for the Mk XVI as in the above model box/profile.  As of today I am on vacation 'til the end of May so I'll make it a priority, now that I think of it I still haven't finished that BPF Hellcat either...

The Mk IXs had better altitude performance than any Soviet fighter but most of the fighting was done at low altitudes. So it was decided to use them in the PVO regiments. These units were tasked with defending key cities and installations from air attack and had proper airfields with concrete runways. Trouble is, by the time the Spit IXs became operational the long range LW attacks and recon flights had dried up. The front line was soon pushed too far west and the Spits saw little action.

That would imply otherwise. If you can find one that specifically saw combat (i.e. the one shot down before the museum repainted it?) that would be great. I dislike the idea of a skin on a plane that never saw combat, though.


EDIT: I see the museum hasn't restored it yet. Interesting that it's got mostly RAF markings. All the VVS markings eroded away over the years (only being just visible), so it's kind of moot as far as skinning it goes (nothing to go on!). Pretty astounding how that plane wrapped the tail like that!

It's the messerspit. 109F engine mated to a Spit (SpitV, I think?) frame. Many complications due to different voltages with the 109 engine and the spit frame, supposedly was better than a spit or a 109, but was only a test bed.

It may have been bombed on a runway. Either that or I'm thinking of the 109Z.

They were generally assigned to air defence units (and fleet/navy units).......... the main beef the VVS seemed to have agin the Spit was the comparatively maintenance heavy Merlin. It was not built to the brick sh*t house standards normally required by front line VVs units(VVS view not mine).


Duxford spit is interesting. I am sure they have researched it as much as possible. Delivered Dec44 yet found shot up on the Russian Steppe (Ukraine?). Yet Romania had surrendered in August 44 and the Red Army had crossed into both Romania and Hungary before this bird was delivered...

In essence then the UKraine was rear of the lines (by the time this Spit would have been assigned) and might well indeed have been under the guard of rear air defence units or indeed parts of the Black sea naval air regiments.  Its combat damage would have been as a result then of a rare incursion (for time) of the LW into what would have been considered pretty secure VVS air space.
