If you think it is hot now, be glad it is not August.

I talked to Tex01 "Whiteman" on the BBS last night about you. Hopefully he'll contact you on the BBS.
I don't advocate drinking and driving especially when you're used to driving on the other side of the road.

Howdy! Welcome to Texas! There are a lot of shooting ranges in the area. A nice place to visit is the Air Museum in Galveston.

I love that place!!  I always make sure to pop by there every time I go back home to visit my Dad.  Awesome museum, especially with being able to go out on the tarmac and walk around the planes, watch them takeoff and land and talk to the pilots.  Very easy to spend an entire day there.  I saw where they got hit pretty hard by Ike, anyone know how well they're bouncing back?

I drive through Manvel all the time on my way to San Luis Pass, one of the largest natural passes in the United States.  The fishing is excellent and this is the best time of year to be fishing there.  Hire yourself a fishing guide and let them take you to the fish and show you how to catch them.  PM me and I can recommend a guide for you.  This would be my first stop if I were coming here, but I love fishing.

Other than the Air Museum in Galveston and shooting ranges (lots of them, just get a phone book), there are other interesting things to do in the area.  One that almost all tourists hit is the Johnson Space Center (NASA) in Clear Lake which is about an hour from where you will be.  Most people aren't super impressed with it when they go but it is still cool when you consider the history of the place.  If I were you, I would visit.  Another big one is the Alamo in San Antonio, also another place that is interesting when you consider the history and fun to say you've seen, but not all that impressive, really.  I would go anyway, the trip from Houston to San Antonio is very scenic and will take you about 4 hours.

Those are the two big ones (other than the fishing) but there are all kinds of things to do.  Get on the internet and poke around some.  Oh, and the food is great.  Eat yourself a great big steak from a proper steak house and enjoy some Texas beef.  Go to the Strip House in Downtown Houston http://www.striphouse.com/ you won't be disappointed.

Man, we used to have a bay house in the Titlum Tatlum cut of the San Luis pass bay there, I loved that place!  We used to spend every weekend there fishing and listening to Strohs games on the radio we brought with us. No power, no running water, nothing but cots and Off! and a dock and our boat.  The fishing was always outstanding and the sunsets and sunrises beautiful.  Once we got caught anchored just on the gulf side of the pass bridge when the current went from slack to running out, it swung us around and almost drove us into that sand bar that runs out by the fishing pier there.  The surf was pounding the boat so hard the motor was having trouble starting.  I was hauling on the rope with everything I had and just couldn't move against the current.  My little brother was bailing water and my dad was working on the starter.  We finally got it started, but it was a real scare, and we really almost went down in that severe current.  We just laugh about it now though.

I miss living down there.

Sorry about the hijack.

Very cool about the house and I have had some of those bad experiences too.  Don't want to say too much and get this thing jacked, but it does remind me to tell our English buddy not to swim in the pass if he finds himself down there.  Deadly stuff when the tide is rippin'.

Well it does say in very very large letters " warning extremely hazardous current do not wade or swim "  right on the side of the bridge.  He'd have to see it if he went down there.  Just look for the guys wade fishing, and stay out of the water where they are.  If I recall corrctly about 10-12 people a year drown there.   Just stay out of the pass and it'll be ok.  I've had that current there crush everything in my bait bucket to death against the bottom of the bucket before.  It's a very very fast and nasty current.  The fishing however is excellent.  Catch just one bull redfish and you'll always have a great fishing story to tell.
