I've played with some of those for a while, making them think I was all for the deal, and then "WHACK", hehe.
There is another scam running though, which is a tad worse. I run a small guesthouse and get tourists from all over the world. Sometimes I get rather large booking requests where the customer wants to pay with CC. I do not (yet) accept CC, so the scammers sort themselves out by insisting on CC. Now they're getting better and offering cheques!
The trick is (as far as I know) to book via CC, then quickly cancel the booking and get repaid. The victim will later find out (in the laggy CC world) that the card is invalid and so on.
I've been thinking about teaching those a hard lesson, for normally they do not read my text all to well. I can include that bookings are non-refundable and accept their "cash", and I can insist they call me with the CC number and keep them chatting a bit, and so on. The phone rate from ...Nigeria...is costly

Anyway, they're getting tougher to sort out, so it's time consuming. And if I book and reserve, and do eventually not get paid, I may loose other possible guests. Then there is the odd chance of such a request being authentic.
Any ideas? What would you do? I am not too well into the world of plastic payment, so I don't know the ropes. AFAIK you get the payment AFTER the CC company does, but I may be wrong.
I'll try to find a text for you when I have the time.
