Situations when you see undamaged and fully capable plane, shot him down and got assist are very rare.
If you shoot at already damaged plane you know you can get assist instead of kill. Why it should depend on range to initial attacker is beyond me.

Rule "who do most damage get a kill" is clear and fair. Leave it as is.

I'm pretty sure my intent was clear: to stop situations where you shoot up a plane and YOU leave the area, but still get the kill after you're a sector away. I've been on both sides of this: I've put fire into a guy who remains perfectly flyable and for whatever reason I'm unable to finish him off (out of fuel and need to RTB so can't press the attack. Can't press due to enemy numbers or positioning, etc) and egress out of the fight. A minute away from landing all the sudden I get the kill after someone else finishes him off. I've also sawed the wing off a plane that showed absolutely no external sign of damage (no missing parts, no smoking, etc) and some guy 25 miles away got the kill because he put a single 30mm round in that only knocked him down to a handful "hitpoints" left on the wing but did no other damage.

You don't know if he bailed, augered, bled out (pilot wound0, booted, or got shot down when you receive the kill message as your landing.

As I said, Yay, Free kill.

I don't see the problem.

You engage the bandit at 15K.

After a couple of turns, you land a snapshot that smokes the engine and wounds the pilot. Bandit unloads for the deck in the direction of ack and other bandits. You do not follow, because there are other bandits in the area and it would be pointless to give up all your alt to chase a kill into ack.

The bandit crashes himself attempting to RTB or in landing pattern, or simply expires from the pilot wound, or gets vulched attempting to RTB or in the landing pattern.

Current system: You probably get the kill.

Your proposed system: Whoever decides to bounce a smoking plane on the run gets a kill, or, if he crashes, someone closer gets the proxy, since we both know why we can't get rid of proxy kills.

Okay, which one sounds more fair here?

Depends upon what you want.

1) What we have now

2) WWII Kill claim............. see bogie die, bail, crash, ditch & claim victory (press button x) pilot with most ammo in bogie making claim gets kill rest get assists (if they have hits & have made a claim). This should end proxy kills.

If I tag a bogey good and he does not go down right off the bat then I am more than happy to add to the collective pot of whichever team I'm flying for.  Its no biggie to me.
Conversely, If I come across some poor SOB flying RTB with half a wing sawed off I am more than obliged to put the red out of his misery.

Although I get your point and do not disagree with it, enhancing this aspect of the game just wouldn't add anything worthwhile for me.  But hey, if it comes along, well then...there it is.

This would just make more people dive in on that one con going down in flames, while six others flyby, hoping they didn't 'lose' their kill.
