A nice picture and short brief on KI-61:
KI-61 Tony

Anyone know which variant we're getting?
Ki-61-Ia:
Two 20mm MG 151/20 cannon in wings
                                             (German supplied)
Two 7.7mm machine guns above engines

                                             Ki-61-Id:
                                             Two 30mm cannon in wings
Two 7.7mm machine guns above engines

                                             Ki-61-IIb:
Four 20mm Ho-5 cannon in wings

From what Mitsu said it could be either a Ki-61-Ib (2x .50 cal, 2x MG151) or a Ki-16-KAIc (2x .50 cal, 2x Ho-5). I haven't figured it out yet myself, but he's the expert and I don't work here.     I checked the links people posted elsewhere before raiding Mr Baugher's site. All the info points to one of those two aircraft being it.

The paintjob is from a Ki-61-Ic with German Mausers, but if you look at this pic of a real plane:

You will notice that the cannon barrels are missing from the AH version.

The AH version also has the supercharger intake positioned further from the LE of the wing, indicating the 19cm longer nose of the Ki-61-I-KAIc.

The nose longer so they could fit two of the superior Japanese Ho-5 20mm cannon. 2x12.7mm Ho-103 were fitted to the wings.

The plane should have this paintjob - one of Kobayashi's later planes with 14 kill markings, 12 of which are B-29's(one of which he rammed with the AH plane).

I suspect this a Ki-61-I KAI.

The give away is the bomb mounts on the wing.

So we are looking at 2x20mm HO-5 in nose, 2x12.7mm HO-103 in the wings and provisions for up to 2x250kg bombs.

Not bad at all

Now now, before you say the "B" word, there are two more worthy canidates (maybe not numerically).

I would like to see a Ki-67 "Hiryu". Its a bit better than the Betty in the way of armor/protection, and being a 1944 Japanese Army bomber, it would compliment the 1944 Ki-61-I KAIc we seem to be getting very well.

Bomber two would be the H8K2. H8K is a 1941-1942 bomber/flying boat. It carries bombs (twice as much as Betty or Ki-67), troops and torpedoes. Defensively it has 5x20mm Type 99 cannons as well as an array of 7.9mm stations.
I doubt that the Type99 20mm will be THAT effective as a defensive weapon since it is basically a MG/FF 20mm used on early the 109/190 series. But perhaps the ballistics of an AP type of round would make it a viable dfensive weapon, and offset it's slow rate of fire.

...nice to see more IJ planes getting air time.

Yes Juzz, the one with twin nose-mounted 20mm Ho-5 cannons. Check the link I posted above for more info, plus the half-dozen posts in General about it.

There is some question
about the particular variant of the Ki-61 that we're doing. This is not an easily answerable question because the exact nomenclature for some Ki-61s is a subject of debate. It could be the Ic, it could be the Id depending on what nomenclature you think is correct. We'll probably call it the Ki-61-I-KAIc to try and keep the confusion to a minimum. Whatever you wish to call it, it's a modified airframe from the initial version and is armed with 2 Ho-5 20mm cannons in the cowling and 2 12.7mm MG in the wings.

Not necessarily...

The Japanese had two very good medium bombers, that would be very useful in Aces High. The P1Y "Frances" and the Ki67 "Peggy".

Both had self sealing fuel tanks and adequate armor while being VERY fast and quite manuverable for a medium bomber.

The P1Y "Frances" had a top speed of around 340mph, while the Ki67 "Peggy" had a top speed of around 335mph. Just for reference the B26 has a top speed of 285mph. And don't forget that many of the planes in AH (for instance Spit IX's and Niki's) have problems setting up proper attacks on B26's already, due to its speed and manueverability.

Both also had either 20mm cannons or 12.7mm MG's for defensive fire. So I expect them to hit hard.

Now I'm not saying that either of these planes could outrun fighters, but they can easily keep the fighters in the deadly "six cone" of bomber uber fire.

Do NOT mistake either of these bombers for "Betty-Clones".
