IL2's Eye Candy + Aces High 2 Flight Model =?
« on: May 20, 2009, 11:15:49 PM »
I know this has been discussed before but i would like to refresh the topic and get some new opinions as well as general ideas about it.  If AH2 had IL2's eye candy how would it effect Aces High as a community as well as the game itself? Would it be a positive effect or negative effect on the sim?

My opinion on it is that HTC would see increased subscriptions as well as more income but as with all of the new subscribers i think that the community would take a noticeable dent in player quality due to the increased player count as well as the possibility of majority of newer players being the "quake style" or "Scoot nd Shoot" flying styles.

It would however, be a blessing for us players who have been waiting for a update of that stature no matter how long the wait and would be greatly welcomed and many sleepless nights will follow.  :devil Reason for this topic is from a video that i have just stumbled across and it has got to be one of the best Flight sim films I've seen this year. Link below for the interested!  :aok

This is a docudrama movie about Aussie legend Nicky Barr of 3 squadron RAAF.  Very creative use is made of the Armed Assault game engine to enhance the human interest and ground action.

I have a PC that can handle any upgrade to graphics that HTC can offer in the future.   I would upgrade accordingly if it wasn't able to handle them.

But HTC's Customer Service goes farther with me, than anything else.   That alone keeps me coming back.

I don't know.  Seems like the eye candy in AH isn't too bad :)

I loved the sounds that were used, Thanks for sharing and they should make a Movie about this guy and do you know if there's an autobiography about his exploits in WW2, would make for good reading.

The more eye candy that HTC puts into the game, the more people left behind...........and you porbably would see less numbers in arenas or would have to drop down the arena limits ( not that this would be a bad thing in some players eyes )........ if you wanted to have a game that still offered a good frame rate .........just my opinion

and I think HTC's overall Customer Service, game pla, scenarios, events and community is what sets it apart from all the others.......

nice video.thanks for the link.......

OK Ah terrain isn't as fancy as IL-2s 36 man arenas but when your nose is in the gunsite who's looking at trees.

As for the planes they look just as good.

Those boys at IL-2 can sure put some films together......search  "Not my time to die"

Awesome animation!!!  But that is really a 2nd tier thing in your thread sir..........

Graphics ability in game or on your monitor has less to do with performance than most of us realize.  The backend of the game works hard with the processor to give us perhaps the most accurate modeling of WWII aircraft anywhere.  That is the biggest cause of FPS slowdowns, not really any graphics issues.

So at this point somebody is going to jump in with " but my fps only drops when I get near a bunch of other people."  True.....  Because now your computer is getting relayed data about the flight physics of 20 other planes.  At the point of fps slowdown, all those planes are still just a few pixels on your screen.   But your computer still has to plan their path of travel.  Each plane is basically more then just one straight line, or vector, flying through the air.  BnZs, just yesterday brought up a great fact about such flight modeling........

Anax: I fool around with a non-combat flight sim called X-Plane. In the "Plane-Maker" module, you can set the number of elements along the wings and stabs for which lift and drag are measured. Simply increasing the numbers of points being measured for flight modeling purposes from say 4 to 10 on all lift surfaces for a given craft can cause a notable slow down in frame rates when flying that craft.

I can only guess but knowing that HTC has been in rough water in the past due to making vast changes in game dynamics, I would think that we are in a "happy medium" area of flight sims.  Best modeling, but maybe not the greatest graphics.....Yet the graphics heavy iL2 has 2-dimensional trees........  (When I say best modeling, I am not including MSFS.... never played it but I hear it is nice)  And as for the 2d trees in iL2, I'm sure there is a whole bunch more in the game that have crappy looks to them.  So for iL2, they decided to sacrifice the backgrounds for the foregrounds.

BUT.......... I think we shouldn't get down about graphics really as we have a GREAT update coming....

And from the looks of it, this will make us rather equal to iL2.  I don't want to think our trees will change so much, but for the flying experience, you will be able to easily compare the two.

I won't be able to compare Il-2 to the new AH terrain until we get the full release.  Tell you what, I'm far more excited about our new clouds than the terrain.
