688th ShAP Il-2m3
« on: May 24, 2009, 04:54:11 AM »
I've been struggling to find decent info on a winter camo'd Il-2. All the photos are either of single seaters or don't have or show unit markings. So I settled on this 37mm armed example which is shown as a profile in several books I have. The profile in "Soviet Air Power in WW2" says it was based at Stalingrad in the winter of 42/43 but says "unit unknown". However the 688th ShAP was the only regiment flying 37mm Il-2s at this time as it was the trials unit for the aircraft. The 688th was based near Stalingrad so it all fits quite well.

This skin probably won't get much MA use, but it might be useful for scenarios.

I would say it would get a lot of use only because it is differant. Just like a black P38-G would get a lot of use when it gets added. Sorry Krusty & Guppy. :D  Nice job Greebo.

Agreed on the usage. It'll see plenty because with aircraft in AH you pick a skin for coolness factor, "just looks sweet" factor, and so on. You don't necessarily need to match the terrain you fly over.   :D

Thanks guys, glad you like it. I kind of like doing winter skins, might try a Ju 88 as well.

Kazan, I believe the Polish Il-2 regiments were marked in a similar way to the RAF's Polish squadrons during WW2. They had the standard VVS stars with a Polish chequerboard on the nose. Trouble is, I have found no profiles and one only photo of a WW2 Polish Il-2 and this photo only shows the nose of the aircraft. If you can find me either a profile or a photo showing the whole plane, I'd be happy to skin it.

Greebo...I think it's great. Would definately be my skin of choice.

And Lyric that's a 38J you're thinking of...

Sorry my cp graphics aren't super, but you get an idea. This is what Larry had been working on. I hope it gets accepted.

Sorry for the hijack Greebo...carry on  :frown:
