Better yet remove AI ack from fleets.
If you want to keep your CV alive you better start to protect it youself with aircover and mannable AAA.

Field ack is not a problem; I followed a con thru field and when he flyed straight over the ack I killed it first

Welp lets just drop all pretense towards a realism state of mind. Lets just drop all ack, fields and fleets. They just get in the way of the quake and doomfest players who can't stand being shot down by anything but another plane. We don't need any immersion into a realistic arena. Lets just have a wall to wall furball.

Make planes spawn at randomized spots without fields so they can't be taken down. Just keep the HQ and troop factories for those gamers interested in perks. The random plane spawn will eliminate vulching complaints and without ack (or a field) there will be nothing to detract from pure A2A fighting.

Lets reward those players who have lots of time to invest in the game with even better planes as they gain skills. That way they will be even more deadly at shooting down the opposition... oops we already have that one, sorry.

the problems with ack on ships:

1) It can fire through superstructure and has no traverse limits. If the island of the ship is between you and the gun emplacement, it can still shoot at you.

2) It can instantly switch targets and range them. In the war, the shells had proximity fuses but thats it. They couldnt insta calculate lead to shoot at you at 10k distance.

3) Gunners instantly switch targets. Threes no settling time to re acquire and get a new solution.

4) You cant kilgunners. In the war, when dive bombers were making their attacks on shipping, fighters often strafed the gun emplacements to surpress fire. Cant do that here.

(I dont have as much of a problem with field ack since you are able to dodge and kill it, this pertains mostly to fleet ack, tho both field and fleet ack are flawed)

For instance. try killing an ostwind. You can double team them and play games with their heads. Why? Because they are *people* with *human minds*. Sometimes the little ostwinds will be tricky tho. One time i had a smart little ostwind fire a quick burst at a friendly plane. I swooped in for a quick strafing pass, figuring he was distracted, but he was looking right at me. I gave him a <S> for being a tricky little bastard.

Respectfully, Anti-aircraft fire is supposed to make it difficult to successfully attack a high value asset like a carrier task force.  No free rides.

One thing to consider with the ship AAA, as with the fild AAA, is that not all the guns are modeled...while the CV has all her 5" guns, it has only a fraction of the 20 and 40 mm guns a late war Essex class had in real life.

I have to agree, the ack on the ships SHOULD be a massive barrage.  The only problem I see is their lack of engagement of multiple targets.  Maybe making them follow legitimate traverse and making the "open" gunners succeptable to strafe would be nice, but take a look at some footage from WW2 of fleet AAA, the sky was BLACK with fire, consider yourselves lucky.

How about at least making Flak loose accuracy at night?

I'm at 25K in the pitch black of night and all the sudden there are flak bursts EVERYWHERE!!  

I'm at 400+ TAS so I turn and dive the other way thinking I can get out of range. Then, at 500+ in a shallow dive (had to be 4 - 5 miles from fleet at this point) I get single pinged back to the tower.

It's bad enough that they are dead accurate and fast tracking during the day, but in the middle of the night? Come on.

Flak in this Sim is modelled completely incorrectly.  There were no cases of it being able to pick off fighters at the types of ranges we are seeing here.  Even Bombers flying in predictable paths at lower speeds were not that easy to hit.

Flak kills against for example the Kamikazes, depended on sheer volumn for hits.  You'd have Hundreds of Guns firing at a single Kamikaze, a wall of tracers, and yet usually they were able to close within 100 ft of a ship.

I say increase the numbers of 25mm, and decrease the long range effectiveness.  That would mean a side would need to CAP its carriers, or have them go to the bottom.

 Didn't late war US CV's have radar controlled AA?

 Anyway, I think the idea of being able to strafe the ship based AA, is a good idea.
