B26 Bug, turboprop equipped?
« on: February 03, 2000, 07:37:00 PM »
Okay, maybe I am being a little picky here, but according to my sources the B-26 had a service ceiling of 19,800 ft.

Twice tonight I intercepted the Bish flying B-26's at 30K +, off the edge of the map, trying to sneak past us.

If you think trying to intercept a B-17 is hard at 30K+, try a B-26.

And yes I have film.

Duh. I've posted before about it's top speed, 400mph+ at 42k... IIRC it should be like 300mph at 15k...

I did some testing...

Ceiling figures are generally for when the plane reaches 500fpm RoC. The B-26B in AH with 100% fuel and 8x500lb bombs(happily running at 61in MAP/2700rpm all day), reaches it's ceiling at about 20k. So far, so good.

I dropped 4 of the bombs, shot most of the .50 ammo load off, then the ceiling increased to about 26k. Sounds reasonable to me.

Above 26k the extra-secret-turbo kicked in, and RoC increased again over 500fpm once higher than 26k, but I only got to 31k before the plane started a series of oscillations and could climb no higher. Now that was weird...

With only 25% fuel and most of the ammo gone(Left 200 front guns, 1000 rear turret) and 4x500lb bombs, the ceiling goes up to - suprise - 31k?! The same oscillations started up again, and no higher did I go. Hmmm... The climbrate this time was much higher, starting at 2000+fpm and reducing to 1250fpm at 20k, but it never actually got down to 500fpm by 31k though, so maybe you could manually fly it over 31k, but I didn't try though.

I hope PYRO will fix the ridiculous FM of our buffs.

Last evening I couldnt reach a B17 at 32K with my (beautiful finnish  ) G-2 at full WEP and 50% fuel. Bhà ....

Yeah, I was flat-out WEP'd, shallow dive and couldn't catch a B17 - no exaggeration!

Found the problem on the 26 today, it'll be fixed in the next version.

The B-17 has a turbosupercharged engine that maintains performance up to 33k.

"The ceiling and climb at 35,000 feet are as great or greater than that of many fighter airplanes, but the high speed is not as great as most fighters at normal altitudes; therefore, in order to outperform any enemy at 35,000 feet it will be necessary to outclimb him rather than outdistance him."
