HAhahaha that is so true...

Exactly what the potatod monkeys do all night long here...  If all HT did was put up a piper and then flash airplanes in front of it, most people in here would play that, then people that like to fight would get the arenas back to fight in...  LOLH

Haven't got a screenshot of one, but L4D headshots are about this messy.

<rant>I'm so mad that L4D won awards, it is absolutley nothing new.  It's not revolutionary, it's plot is boring and overused, it's graphics engine is from 2004...  This game was literally produced by Valve to get the last bit of money out of their Source engine before they brought out the new one with Half-Life 3.  The console version of L4D is even worse in terms of controls!  They say teamwork is a big part of this game when in reality, it is so poorly done and prone to lag, that it's nearly impossible to do anything if the host has a less-than-optimal connection.  Seriously, the "Nazi Zombie" bonus game mode on Call of Duty: World at War is about 100x better.</rant>

I love the onion lol :)

L4D hit the mark just right.  The plot doesn't exist and isn't the draw (quality coop and major zombie massacres are) so there's not much sense in criticizing the game for that. The little plot that it does have (dialog) is really good though - I dunno who could fault that.  The graphics engine is old but aged great.  It looks better than a lot of the recent totally overdone eye candy games.. plastic looking bump and reflectivity maps, totally mis-used physics engines, etc.  The console version sucks and why shouldn't it?!  FPS on console peripherals is a ridiculous idea.
I don't know what servers you've been playing to find connection to be a problem... The servers do crash on map changes, but it's a pretty low rate.

Team work is the best part and probably the whole point of the game.  Playing with random players in public servers is a pretty dodgy bet, but it pays off most of the time.  Just find some good friends and play on expert, or better yet, find a server with custom settings to make the game a bit more realistic.  Valve's intentions don't matter.

Maybe this is where I differ from other people, but I do feel like this game is just another zombie massacre game.  When I was playing, it really just felt like I was playing Zombie Mod for CS:S (albeit with less people and AI zombies), and I wouldn't have had to pay for that...  I mean, what real plot is there to the story?  "Oh no, we must get to this point without dying to zombies!"  It's also unfortunate how predictable the game can be, the first time I played the game I knew when there was a trap... like stairwells.

As for the engine, in 2004, it was the best out there.  Hell Half-Life 2 still looks better than some games put out recently.  But waiting 5-6 years in between games and still using the same engine without revamping is very much pushing it.  Personally I don't think the physics in the Source engine are all that great, I've bumped into file cabinents before, they don't wabble around and fall over like they do in Source... (However, I could just be getting picky.)

FPS on console has been done several times extremely well, but Valve has a bad habbit of porting their PC games to console without really looking into the controls much, if at all.  (Enter: The Orange Box)

Valves intentions do matter, at least to me.  You can tell where a video game company is going based on their actions.  I'd hate so see a company like Valve end up like a company like EA.

I guess what I'm saying is that this game seemed half assed, and that is very much an opinion.

Yes, it's just another zombie massacre game.  No other game when L4D came out would, as far as I remember, allow you to have such a great time playing it in coop... Hell, no other coop FPS was as fun.
Yes, no plot, that's beside the point. You don't need plot in a game made to be easily picked up online and replayed over and over. Not anymore than AH needs a plot.

I don't know what you mean by stairwells being a trap.. Pretty much any spot on the maps can be trouble.. If anything, narrow passages like stairwells (alleys excluded, since they can drop from above) are a walk in the park with just one shottie in the group, or even just one sniper on his own if it's narrow enough.

I don't see what the big deal is about the engine. It's old, so what?  It still looks good and allows a lot of zombies as well as a larger audience (no need for a brand new box to play it).  Half-assed or not, it's a ton of fun.

FPS on console is crap, no matter how you spin it.. Only a mouse and keyboard do it justice.

Valve.. Who cares?  Buy what's good, don't buy what's not.  It doesnt matter if it's from EA or your neighbour's weekend coading.  When I'm having a blast blowing up zombies with a couple of friends, the last thing I care about is whether EA or Jimmy Joe Bob coaded it.

Clearly this is where our opinions differ. :)

I coulda sworn that just arguing things of no consequence was guaranteed to piss people off!! Where did I go wrong?  :lol

FWIW, I think L4D2 is what's past the "ridiculous milking" threshold.. L4D1 wasn't though.

The engine may be old, but it still works fine. Another example of old engines that work well is the Freespace 2 engine. The modding community has been modding the engine for years, and is still going strong. The engine is ideal for space sims, and one of the most recent mods coming out is the Diaspora mod, based on Battlestar Galactica.

Absolutley, I have problem with old engines... I just don't know if it's "award winning" if you know what I mean.
