P-47M stuff
« on: February 11, 2000, 05:33:00 AM »
Read all my P-47 books ( gigantic ammount: 3 of them ) that I had lying around - until now unread. After Rebel's post about P-47M in some thread I got interested, and now to me it seems to be in the same class with F4U-1C as far as its marginal role in WWII goes.

This is the info from the books. There were 130 produced and only unit to operate it was the 8th AAF 56th FG. First sortie 16th Jan '45 the planes being grounded from 26th Feb '45 until 14th Mar '45, after which it flew until the war ended ( the dates are from memory, but I read the books less than week a go so I think I got them right? ).

There was a mention of N model, but I skipped those parts cause all of it seemed to be about PTO. How's that model compared to M? Thus far I couldn't agree on M model, not that it prolly matters anything, just FYI.

N model was basically the same as the M but with different wings. The wing was "wet" as they added fuel tanks to it (previous P-47's did not have fuel in the wings) but they found it now had a horrendous roll rate and so they clipped the wing tips to give it a square tip look. It also had a very pronounced dorsal filet to restore some of the stability that was lost when they removed the earlir versions 'razor back' part of the fuselage and went to the bubble top canopy model. In this pic you can see the different wing tip and the "fin" behind the cockpit.

There were about 1800 P-47N's made and quite a number served in action escorting B-29's over Japan before the surrender there.
Go here to read about them  http://home.att.net/~historyzone/Seversky-Republic8.html

all from this great web site: http://home.att.net/~C.C.Jordan/index.html

does this mean we have 3 P-47 nuts??   We almost have a "Fright Flight" made here   !

Did you count me as a P47 nut yet?

Yep.  Westy hit the nail on the head.  But hey!  Little known fact!

In combat with the 262, the 47 M's would arrive with the 262 coming at them, a bit lower.  Once he got inside of a half mile, they'd split-S, and firewall the throttle, and actually have a shot at the bastard

In any case, the P-47N had a laminar flow wing (i.e. Mustang) with fuel tanks for long range flights, but with the power of the 47M's engine.  I don't know the specific flight "quirks" it had, but I'll look it up tonight

and Lephturn finishes out a Killer Quad!

Actually I'd love to see some training films Lephturn on using the roll in a P47 to help "outturn" 109's etc when we finally have them here. I figure the P47 here will more likely resemble a brand "W" P-47 than the brand "A's" P-47 and I really have a "thing" for the P-47 and want to master it.

I fly the Jug almost exclusively in brand "W" Westy.  We'll get together when the revolution comes, don't worry.  (you just better fly knight  )

I believe the biggest features of the N was the squared and clipped wingtips, fillet on the tail and the tanks in the wings. The fillet increased the stability of the plane at low speed, The N was the most stable of the bubble P47 mods? The squared wingtip was actually done to redeseign around those tanks I think, But I remeber it being written that it gave the N the best turn performance and roll rates of any of the P47 models. The tanks gave it breathing room for long range escort with drop tanks.

You know Westy, I didn't always use the verticle to win in the P47, though that is the preferred method.  The 47 has great WEP and a great supercharger.  With it's big wings it's a great high-alt bird.  At higher altitudes I could many times push the Jug for one or two passes to get a kill.  I became skilled at knowing when to drop flaps and pull to a stall for the kill.  I died learning it, but after a bit I could sometimes kill a "better" plane by hanging it all out for my one shot opportunity.  Because many people under-estimated the Jug, you could normally surprise them and get kills when they didn't expect it.  Nobody expects a 47 to pull a hard lead-turn and saddle up. <G>

I can't believe nobody bit on my troll.

P-47M would be fun.  Way better than a D at all altitudes and it would be the KING at high altitudes in scenarios and stuff.

What, the P-47D wouldn't be king enough for you at 30k?

To be historically accurate, the Luftwaffe must have the Me262 at least before the P-47M!

Otherwise, all you're allowed to do is chase buzz bombs with it.

Actually Funked, I would love to see the P-47M or N.

Sure you look at its "Max" speed and most people go "OH MY GOD". But that max speed is very high up, and thats because it has a turbosupercharger that allows it to maintain its horsepower at a high alitude.

Down lower, from my resources, it would be much more comparable to some of our other fighters.

Bring it on I say   But lets not forget the 190D, Spit XIV, F4U-4, Yak3/107, Ki84, and some others
