planes sustaine damage at all ranges withine the max range because the hispano 20mm cannone rounde contains explosive in additione to any kinetique energy transfered on impacte.

You can do damage with both Hispanos and 50mm's at 1000 yards if you can hit.

50 mm's?!  What planes has 50 mm's?  I've heard of 20, 23, 30, 37 and 40 mm cannon, but never the 50 mm's.

I think he means .50 cals

also, Hispanos are good out to 1k in my experience but if you can defelect that far without unloading 50 rounds. . . then you are a better shot then I am.

I meant .50 cals.  Ballistically they and the Hispanos are very close.

It seems to me 20mm cannons do much more damage than the same amount of 50cal bullets.
But I'm a terrible shot.

As mentioned above, cannon rounds explode, as opposed to just hitting and damaging the target with impact velocity / kinetic energy. Therefore a cannon round would do more damage than a 50 cal, generally speaking.

As a reference: http://trainers.hitechcreations.com/guns/guns.htm
Damage from each  (Based on 1/1000th of a 1K bomb)
.50 cal M2 AC   :  1.1716
20mm Hispano  :  4.0300

Even leaving aside the explosive content, a Browning .50 cal has about 17,000 joules of energy at the muzzle where a Hispano Mk II has about 49,500 joules at the muzzle.

The US Navy also concluded that a single Hispano II (M2 20mm cannon in US service) had as much firepower as a bank of three Browning .50 cals.  That isn't one 20mm round being worth three 50 cal rounds, it is one cannon at 10 rounds per second being worth three guns at 36 rounds per second.

To be clear I wasn't talking about how lethal each was, simply how they fly once out of the muzzel.
