To late to delete the post but my question arose from watching a film I made months ago. He was a good Ki pilot so I filmed him. What I did not understand was how he could get his flaps out so early.
Turns out the film viewer is using true speed and not indicated which through me off. My initial thought was that he had some special ability until I investigated into it a little more thoroughly.
There are times throughout the film that his planes flaps would deploy just briefly while going over 200mph and fully deploy at around 186 mph. After filming, I found this to be true even of myself. The action of hitting the flap down button repeatedly makes it appear on film as though they are coming out for that fraction of a second. They don't actually deploy until an indicated speed of 160- 162..... as stated.
