Film Viewer Stutter - Video Included
« on: June 11, 2009, 12:28:39 AM »
I used to make post-race videos back in the day during the early seasons of the AHXARL races.

I never had an issue then with the stuttering one can see in the linked video.

The last 2 videos I did, I simply worked around it but this time I am cutting out so much good footage that I am frustrated.

I never see these stutters during flight itself it's only during playback.

I have read that starting Windows Media Player prior to starting the film viewer sometimes helps.

I tried pretty much EVERY permutation of video settings including resolution, nVidia control panel changes and extended searching on the forums here.

Any advice anyone can provide in getting rid of the stutters (I annotated the film to point them out) would be utterly appreciated.  Ignore the annotations regarding pace plane lag, that is for discussion in the racing forum.

Thanks in advance

The stutters really become obvious around 1:55

Im having the same issues, and i am no dummy when it comes to film. Ive read the quick fixes and the effect is minimal. Here is a quick clip of my film woes. There is nothing taxing on my system going on here, just sustained flight at 75fps in game.

My film days are done until a solution is found. What an fluff'n waste.

I've had this issue since Nov 2007.  It gets worse when you're in a bomber and are switching between gunner positions.  Even with "ignore views" is enabled/disabled many times.  Hope you find a fix.  BTW, I'm not talking about the lag, but rather the "twitching" of the planes.
Time's fun when you're having flies.

Same here... I've stopped making films, basically for this reason alone. Too frustrating

You probably read the thread I had started and then found a solution for this.  The problem I was having is not related to what you're experiencing.  The 'lag' or 'warping' you are seeing is a problem with the recorded film which may stem from either the players racing or the server they're playing on.

The WMP solution works only if the Frames Per Second when watching a Film is noticeably lower.  When I had that issue in game I'd have a solid 60 FPS but when I was making movies and during doing playback of the record film (not recording with Fraps etc) my FPS was noticeably lower, generally 20-30 which made for poor recordings.  This is not what you are experiencing.

Alas, I do not believe there is a solution for the problem you seek.  When I've done movie from FSO's or MA play I'll notice a few planes warp back and forth as depicted in your movie or they may do it more rapidly few quickly and sporadically.

I haven't seen it in the film's but I noticed it tonight while zoomed in a 5" gun on a CV.

how smooth does it play when you reduce the film viewer speed to 25%?

I never record anything i want to look good faster than 25% then simply x4 the playback in your movie maker.

Fraps will record from the AH film viewer at about 10-15 fps unless you have a super computer. When at 25% speed it still records at 10-15 fps which grants 40-60 fps in the finished product.

If its just a film viewer issue like I had a while ago, I know exactly what you mean. Chase view is rubbish as the plane bounces all over. Pan views don't record well at full speed either. I remember my film viewer was acting badly like this but since i started using a newer computer its been very good for normal playback.
And I don't know much, but I do know this. With a golden heart comes a rebel fist.
