I'm sure the peolple dead in front of his plane made his takeoff attempt even easier....morons.

they had nothing to do with it. he should've pulled the throttle long before it got to the point where he felt he had to "yank" it off the water.

I respectfully disagree.  I feel the pilot allowed the situation to control him.  The second he got shifted off the course he could have cut throttle, came to a stop, and taxi around for another try.  He had tons of time to abort.  He chose to push a bad situation.  He chose wrong.

Those people standing dead in the way?   In self interest I would have gotten out of the way sooner, but its not like they were strolling across an active runway.  That looks like one of those observation parks set up especially for people to watch the aircraft.

In my opinion the pilot made some very bad decisions.  Fault can be placed no where else.

Regards,
Wab

Wab nailed it if you notice they were standing right next to the wind sock........... should have aborted that one 1/2 way acrossed the lake

It looks like the plane was dragging.  Experienced float plane pilots might want to comment, but it did not look like the plane got up on the float step very well, too much elevator early?

Yep, looks like he couldn't get up on the step. Could have been overloaded but that TO should have been aborted well before there was any danger to the people on the ground.

You have to remember that this is in Alaska where common sense and safety aren't always paramount.

Three times I was in similar situations where the pilot took on passengers and gear without even asking the weight of either. One time we cleared a fuel barge/dock by less that 10 feet after a very long TO run where the pilot tried multiple times to get up on the step.

Still, my favorite way to travel in AK is in an old piston powered Beaver. Every time I have gotten in one I feel like I've stepped into a wayback machine.

Pilot error, way too much time to abort and he/she did not.
