REALISTIC 8' and 5' gunsites...
« on: June 17, 2009, 08:18:35 PM »
Cruisers, Destroyers, Cv gunners, and and GV's as a community should recieve an upgrade of gunsite...

"Man gunning" a cruiser gun, "firing its main battery at a distant target!!!" would seem alot more realistic with a little dress up of the current gun "site's"...

Granted all the guns in the game are an abridged version of real life, but I think it would be fun to see how the original operation was done "through the lens"....if you know what i mean. :aok

What do "REALISTIC" gunsights look like?

The 5/8 inch guns come across as half baked to me....so many things they could have done that would have dramatically increased there realism and effectiveness.

IE....

Ranging spread.....15.0k  +-.5k yards for the other shells.

Range finder.....historical mind you.

Time delay fusing for 5"....

Foward Observer interface.....

Better maps or a photo recon setup....

Some of this would be a little in depth but some would be really easy in the grand sceme of things.

I fail to see the obsession with slow, unarmed recon planes when you can now take the plane of your choice and fly around telling people what you see.

The only thing I can figure is everyone thinks you are going to fly your slow, unarmed plane around, "point" at something on the ground and it will be magically blown up by some indirect fire coming from somewhere.

Fire when ready Gridley!!!
Maybe you are thinking about a Battry Director position aboard the ships... Much like a Buff gunner directing all available guns at a selected target... Ships guns always had a common gun director, manned by the ships gun captain, or master gunner... The director itself would be a rotating Armored cupola, high on the superstructure, with large, "ears"... The ears are the lenses of a massive stereoscopic rangefinder.. All main bttry guns would be layed on his his readings, (after being cranked thru the mechanical gun computer)... If destroyed, turrets had their own rangefinders, and could operate independently...

Shore Bttrys should work the same way!

This is how the 'sights' worked for the main guns on an Iowa class battleship.

Quote
Turret sights are part of local fire control arrangements which in the main do not function during normal director (primary or auxiliary) control.
The sight system necessitates the following personnel station arrangements:

Three gun layers, one for each independently driven elevating speed gear control, are stationed on the electric deck.
One gun train operator, also located on the electric deck adjacent to the training gear A-end.
Two sight trainers are stationed one each in the right and left stations.
Two sight pointers are stationed similarly, one in each sight station.
Two sight setters are stationed similarly, one in each sight station.
When the guns are being controlled by director (primary or auxiliary) the sight trainers and sight pointers are not required.
This method of control however, does necessitate continuous operation of one sight setter's indicator in order that the correct sight angle will be transmitted mechanically to the gun elevation indicators where it is used as a function of correction for erosion.
The other sight setter, trainers, and pointers "stand by.”In Local Control.
The guns are positioned in elevation by the gun layers according to mechanically or electrically transmitted gun elevaion order from the pointer's position's in either sight station.
The gun train operator on the electric deck does not function in Local Control.
From his station the gun train operator controls a positive clutch permitting handwheel control of the speed gear to be shifted to the sight trainer manning the controlling telescope.
Turret sight installations are destinctive new designs of a telescopic type.
The sight station optics and sight setter's instruments are arranged in a system of sight movement indicating and transmitting shafts and sight handwheel drives that positions the lines of sight, interconnects the like elements of the two sight stations, and extends to indicators at each gun layer and gun train operator station.
The arrangement of these assemblies is such that the elements of either station when clutched to the shaft system comprises a complete sight.
The elements of the other station, disconnected from the shaft system, comprise a standby station which may be quickly synchronized to take over.
Both stations function alike, directly in train and by gun order in elevation, positioning the guns with reference to target.
This is accomplished by sight setter movement of the lines of sight according handwheel manipulation holding cross-wires on the target.

Gunsight ports on the USS North Carolina

Drawing of a fire control box trainer and layer turret sight most commonly used on WW2 cruisers and battleships.

As you can see, 'aiming' down the sights of ship's guns was a little more complicated than just looking down the sights.  I can see why for the sake of game play it's the way it is and really doesn't need to be changed for the sake of 'reality'.
