One of my offices has a window facing Long Beach airport (LGB), which also serves the Boeing factory for the C17, along with the old Douglass and McDonnald-Douglass factories. There's a lot of commercial, general, military, and government aviation going on outside my window.

Just today we had a pair of F/A-18's doing a touch-and-go before coming in for a landing.

We had a B-1 take off last week.

Air Force One landed and took off here last month.

It always makes me smile...

Bah, just a T-38.

Got to see my fist Superhornets this afternoon as well.  One pulled a very nice Cobra like maneuver, looking forward to tomorrow.

I served as OOD on a Nimitz class. The EA-6B is without a doubt the loudest plane on deck. After months at sea it gets to where you can tell by the sound what plane is trapping without looking. It's also a good idea to have your berthing as far down in the ship as possible! Tailhook clanking and the hydraulic wire gear noise goes through the whole ship.

I still dig air shows even though I lived aboard an air show for many years.

I smell Navy base.

When I was in Bagram we had E6's taking off on a hourly basis for patrols. If you were on the phone at the time it would be a good 5 minutes until the pair were airborne until you could resume talking because of the noise. After awhile you get used to it and sleep through it. But after awhile when they didnt take off for awhile you felt like you were missing something.

I was born and raised in Syracuse, NY. A10's and later F16's were quite the norm. I now live in Cary, NC and I see an Apache or Blackhawk motor over my house about 2 or 3 times a week.

Living few kilometers from Krzesiny AFB in western Poland - every day from monday to friday I can see f16s flying over my house on final approach with gears down, picking up speed after take off or just fooling around, chasing each other. Damn how I envy those lucky bastards :).

the closest military we have is a Air National Guard base about 30min north of us, occasionally we see a C-5 Galaxy fly over. But other then that every fall a B-17 flys in to our local airport.

I was an ET on the Kennedy.  My berthing compartment was 03 level... just under the forward cats.  When the cats fired, the whole bow of the ship shook.  Only took me a week at sea to figure out that the shelf at the head of my rack was useless, since whatever was on it would fall off and hit me in the head with every 2 or 3 cat shots.  THe funny thing was, after spending 4 years on her, when we were in port, and I was at home... I couldnt sleep... TOO QUIET!  At sea, I was out like a light with the 3rd or 4th cat shot.

I do remember the apartment I had in Va Beach though... It was right across the road and at the end of one of the runways at Oceana NAS.  When the A6's would come in (or go out) all the windows in the apartment would shake, and no matter how much you turned up the TV, you couldnt hear it.  A6's (and the EA6B)... were by far the loudest of all the navy jets.  14's and 18's were nothing compared to them.

I have the good fortune to live under the approach and departure route for Peterson AFB.  With the Air Force Academy up north and all the fly by's during the home games we have a myriad overflights.  Some of the more interesting one were:

F22
B2
F4
F15
F16
B17
AT6

My wife thinks I am a dork for running outside when I hear the roar of those afterburning turbo jets.  Then again, I think she just thinks I am a dork
