As has been mentioned, you must visit Elvis' house, Graceland, in Memphis. Twenty years from now, you will not forgive yourself if you miss this sacred shrine. A few years ago a visitor found a toenail clipping in the shag carpet - A PIECE OF ELVIS! (I have a series of photographs of my mother, posed in every room of Graceland. It's the best thing my sister and I have to remember her.)

Some miles south of Memphis, along highway 61 in Mississippi, is the cross-roads where Robert Johnson (the great bluesman and essentially the inventor of rock&roll) is said to have traded his soul to the devil for his guitar skills. This place is also sacred and ranks with Lourdes or Jerusalem as holy.

Have a nice ride.

I would stay as far away from Pine Bluff as possible.  Not the safest place in central AR.

i just named it as a reference point for our way towards Mississippi and down to New Orleans.

The River Walk is in San Antonio.

The Rio Grande in about 5-6 hours from Central Texas alone.

State's just too darned BIG.  It is approximately the same distance across Texas as from the west of Texas to the Pacific Ocean or the east border of Texas to the Atlantic Ocean.

I can safely assume you have first hand experience of both, and that is why you are talking about it. :)

My wife and me are visiting the States for about 3 weeks (27th June till 16th July). We will land at Memphis, pick up the rental car. First we will visit some friends in Springdale, Arkansas. After that we want to drive over Pine Bluff down along the Mississippi to New Orleans. From there towards Florida (Panama City) and then back to Memphis.
Deep south . . . in July? . . .

Best advice -- make sure the rental car's AC works well, and bring lots of sunscreen and plenty of fluids.

I do hope you understand the distances you will be traveling.  True story -- some friends of mine had friends of theirs come from Germany, who did not quite understand the scale . . . They thought they could take a "day trip" from near St. Louis to the West coast.   :lol

<Edit> Quick check of mapquest shows more than 1800 miles and more than 29 hours in the car. </Edit>
