Game Crashes
« on: June 23, 2009, 06:36:29 AM »
Over the last month  I seem to be plagued with occasional game crashes.
several nights ago one of them (I'm not sure which)  unchecked the "remember password" box and re enabled in game skin downloads when I re ran the game

Those crashes are usually video card related, and all of them are bogus as the offsets contain invalid memory addresses.  Normally a bus master is crashing the system which is where the invalid memory addresses come from.

It could be from corrupt data in the game's "cache" or "skins" folder.  I would dump both.

It could also be from custom sounds, if you have installed any.

Now that you mention it I have DLed some of the newer skins so I would have them for FSO just prior to the crashes starting.

Im running custom sounds but I've run the same sounds since assembling this build with no prior probs.
Soooo. Im betting on either the cache or skins. or both.
Should I dump all the skins and just start over or just the ones I downloaded recently?
Im pretty sure I still have the list written down of the ones I DLed recently.

Curious as to what you mean by the crashes are "bogus"
I just copied the errors to clipboard and pasted em here. But Im assuming you know that already
You mean windows is reporting false errors?

The Windows "crash" report mechanism lacks a lot to be desired as it cannot know what actually caused a crash.  It is the nature of unexpected events in a computer.  Basically, some software, somewhere tried to access a memory location which was privileged and Microsoft just attributes it to the application which has the focus.
