Video Cards on Laptops?
« on: June 26, 2009, 09:50:00 PM »
Im thinking about upgrading to a video card for the new update but im not shure what to buy. I currently have the intergrated video card that came with my computer:

Name: Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family
Chip Type: Intel(R) GMA 950
Total Memory: 128 MB
1280x800 32bit 60Hz

Here is my computer type:

Gateway MX6930 with Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU     T5200 @ 1.60GHz (2CPUs)

If anyone has any suggestions on any kind of video card for a laptop could you give them to me and ill check them out to see if i could but them.

Thanks You,

You have a laptop.  There is no available option to upgrade your video card.  It is integrated into your motherboard and there is no 'additional' slot to plug in any type of expansion video card.  Asus did make one IIRC for a few of their gaming laptops, but I'm not sure they still do that or if it was a demo.

When you buy a laptop, your upgrade options are very limited, period.  You'll be able to install more RAM, change the hard drive and maybe use some external sound card or other adapters through PCMIA slots, but thats it.

Your Intel Video Chipset isn't designed for gaming period, some of the higher end laptops with dedicated video card built into them from ATI or Nvidia can pull of some not too bad performance in games, but Desktops will always be superior in that aspect.

roger. laptops are for playing Peggle ExtremeTM. upgrading a laptop is as easy as buying a new one. you should look into alienware for intensive gaming.

Just a reminder that some laptops do have an option to upgrade displaycards these days. But they are special gaming laptops with a premium price.

A laptop is generally a very very bad choice for gaming. It's designed to be mobile and energy efficient, not high performance. You want high performance for your money with gaming.

You should buy a laptop for gaming only if two following conditions are both true:

1) You absolutely need to carry the computer around for some reason
2) You absolutely can't afford to get a separate computer for gaming

i beg to differ on that comment..... I just bought a laptop last night for 1300 bucks with some great hardware, more than enough for aces high. Here it is..... http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9375865&type=product&id=1218094582785 I think thats a great price for the available options... I havent had a chance to fool with it yet, but I did get aces high downloaded with the hi res pack. Im just trying to figure out how to get the max res on the game now.

Many newer laptops have a modular VC and are easily upgradeable. wont effect this thread where the VC is integrated but for those considering a laptop it makes it an easier decision for those contemplating dual use.

Alienware is OVERPRICED and under supported.  They charge about3 to 4 times the amount you could build the system yourself for and 2.5 to 3.5 times the amount a system builder would charge.

Only way to go is to either build out a whitebook if your comfortable doing so...or for the minimal cost have someone like Tildeath do it for you. I've built over 100 boxes and I'd say its 99%+ I'll have TD build out the next one. The reality is that the time it takes to tune the system goes far beyond the time to slap the parts in the box. When I've helped friends who "built" (meaning assembled) a system they are amazed at the amount of work actually required to get any reasonable optimization/stability.

go look at the alienware laptops they have on sale right now starting at 1799. they are way overpriced indeed your paying for the name, and eye candy like flashy lights and crap. you dont need that. take a look at the comp I just bought on that link and you will see for 400 bucks less you get a even better computer. I think the only difference really is that the HP i just bought has a 500gb drive instead of the 320gb the AW one has.
