When I was in the Coast Guard I had to drive past PETA's HQ in Norfolk everyday going back and forth to the base from my house. Did it for 8 years. When I first moved here I hadn't even heard of PETA, didn't know that was their HQ, nothing. Got the lowdown within a few months, but the first fall I was here was the best.
Was coming home from work, late November i.e. deer season, and as soon as I came out of the mid-town tunnel and got onto Brambleton Road traffic just stopped. I was sitting there wondering what was going on, traffic was merging over the the left lane and crawling. Got up by PETA's building and there's this poor guy, decked out in hunter orange sitting in his car, hood up, and steam pouring out of his radiator, with a dead deer strapped to the roof of his car. Police are trying to get the PETA freaks to back off so they can get a tow truck in there to move the guys car, but they were going NUTS on this dude.
Talk about the WRONG place to break down with a dead animal strapped to your car. Felt really sorry for the guy. The paper said several PETA folks were arrested and charged with vandalism because they were throwing stuff at his car, broke one of windows, busted out tail lights and stuff. The artical said the guy was sitting in his car with his shotgun loaded waiting for the police after they started attacking his car.
That was also the first year the local radio station started having their annual PETA fishing tournament. Been in a few of those. Always a good time.
