S! Superfly

Nice job on the new Navy planes BTW.

Cowling mounted rifle calibre weapons in aircraft such as the A6M5 and the 190A5 are not very effective in inflicting damage, however they were commonly used for another purpose.  The Japanese and Luftwaffe pilots used them as a gauge to determine whether their guns were on target.  If they could see the flashes from the rounds hitting the target, then they would open up with their heavier 20mm weapons.   Even though the 20mm weapons had different muzzle velocities and trajectories, this provided a good means to increase accuracy without wasting ammunition.

Unfortunatly, and particularly in the case of the 190A5, the muzzle flashes from the cowl guns are so bright they obscure the target and make it nearly impossible to see hits, especially if the target is being given any kind of lead.  Since this is a historical tactic, and since it is impossible to duplicate this technique, then it would seem the muzzle flash effects are overdone and need to be reduced in size and brightness.
