Need Help setting up on HDTV
« on: July 06, 2009, 07:19:16 PM »
Well lucky me I found a 32" LCD HDTV on craigslist for $300 and now I have it connected to my laptop.   :rock

My dilema is that the screen stretches off the edge of the tv and I dont see items such as the taskbar, titlebar, and the scrolling bars.  Is there a way to adjust this?

I am using a laptop and am playing on a 1280x800.  I dont really want to drop resolution to 800x600 as it would seem logical to shrink the size but the video quality isnt as sharp as 1280x800 in AH as thats what I played on the laptop screen before getting this tv.  Havent tried 800x600 but open to suggestions on what would work.

I am running a Nvidia card in this laptop and the tv is connected via dvi-hdmi adapter with the hdmi running to the tv.

Thanks in advance.

You need to run what ever resolution the tv is. If it's 1080p then 1920x1080, if it's 720p then 1280x720. Also turn overscan off on the tv if you can.

How are you connecting to the tv from your computer? Only vga, dvi, and hdmi work very well with computers, with dvi or hdmi being preferred.

Ive got the DVI end of a DVI/HDMI adapter plugged into the laptop and a hdmi plug running from the other end of the adapter to the tv.

Its set on 1080i.

1080i?  Are you sure that is the native resolution of the TV?  Most sets that cannot do 1080p are 720p native, but run 1080i (badly).

Well that is what it is automatically set on when I connected the 2.  It also runs 1080i when I have the PS3 connected.

I don't know how you can stand looking at an interlaced video display.  The flickering would drive me nuts.

By the way, just because the TV can do it, does not make it the native resolution.  Again, many 1080i TV's do not run that mode natively.  They are normally 720P TV's that can run 1080i, but they do so badly.

One other thing.  Are you certain the TV's HDMI/DVI port is compatible with a computer video card output?  The DVI port of a computer is slightly different than the DVI port on a TV meant to be used for video from a cable box.

Either what Skuzzy said, or try adjusting the Aspect Ratio (16:9, 4:3).   Aside from that, you might not be able to use it for a PC monitor.

Well worse comes to worse I can dig up a dvi to vga cord.

With some tweaking it works just cant see the extremities which really is no big deal.

I am using a 32" HDTV right now.  Resolution I use is 1360x768, as the manual for the TV stated this was the native resolution.  This was the best looking resolution.

1280x800 seems to be an odd resolution for a widescreen tv.  Try these other resolutions if you are unsure of your native resolution;
1360x768
1280x720
1920x1080
I listed some widescreen resolutions off the top of my head.

I had used the Nvidia auto scale in the control panel and according to it the native is 1280x768 but Ill try those.

Now depending on your video card you can go into the video control panel and resize your desk top. here is what I had to do, yours may be the same.

Step 1: Right click on desktop and bring up the Nvidea control panel

step 2: High light resize my desk top

then the last step is moving your sliders to adjust so the arrows fit in your screen..

hopefully that helped you out...

Ive tried several drivers now and I cant find the resize desktop in the control panel even though it says in the help feature that it should be there.

Discovered the problem, it has to be on single display which I didnt set when trying to figure it out lol.  With single display it is now listed thanks.
